The Orange (37-39 Pimlico Road, London, London, SW1W 8NE) What a find! Really cozy, recently refurbed and stylishly done. We enjoyed an excellent evening here within the first week of its re-opening and the food and service were so homely and warm. All portions are very generously sized and we liked the option of ordering a main with a variety of sides, reasonably and fairly priced too. The meatballs starter were very tatsy, the cod main course was beautifully presented and a very healthy piece of fish and my half chicken was so moist and packed with flavour. All in all a very well priced, up market establishment which is definitely a notch above a gastro pub without the formality of restaurant dining. We'll be back but it will most certainly become *very* popular.

It is such a shame that the lack of warmth from the front of house and their accompanying pomposity always spoil the experience here. We have eaten here amongst all the eurotrash, gaudily overdressed types a handful of times and just feel this restaurant has an overblown opinion of it's worth…on more than one occasion we have arrived without a booking and were made to feel as though they were doing us a huge favour by allowing us to eat there – boring! The restaurant hadn't even half filled up before we had left on each occasion. It is a shame as the serving staff are nice, it serves lovely food and is nicely decorated, but it has all the charm and welcome of queueing to get into a West End nightclub.

La Poule au Pot (231 Ebury Street, London, London, SW1W 8UT) Never had anything other than beautiful food here in a perfect restaurant ambience. The onion soup is delicious and we very much enjoy any of the main courses here, in particular the sea bass which is so beautifully presented and cooked. The service is always prompt, but the front of house needs a little more warmth to make the entrance the perfect welcome. Amongst our favourite, honest and reliable dining experiences…little bit of french perfection in a very romantic environment.

Mandarin Kitchen (14-16 Queensway, London, W2 3RX) Just like stepping into a bustling, vibrant Hong Kong eaterie and packed with Chinese folk, so clearly a good sign. Our food was a bit curate's egg – duck was very good, but the sea bass was poorly cooked, tasteless and an unpleasant texture…rice and noodles were ok. The service and atmosphere was excellent but I do think that modern London restaurant standards have left this place behind a bit in the food department. All in all a good place for atmosphere, fun and noise but not a tremendous dining experience.

Olivo (21 Eccleston Street, London, SW1W 9LX) Beautiful food, fantastic atmosphere and friendly prompt service – dated decor! We had a lovely meal of very fresh food which was presented just as nicely, although our sea bream was a bit sardine sized and with no veg seemed a bit sparse, even for my size 8 girlfriend who doesn't have a workmans appetite! My lamb was superb and our companions meals were equally well received. I would visit here regularly as it is lovely, but I do hope they can look at the colour scheme.

Canteen Baker Street (55 Baker Street, London, London, W1U 8EW) Very simple and a very nicely presented philosophy behind what their intentions are. All the food was very fresh, beautifully cooked and presented and a perfect example of simple food done well. Our only minus that was lacking was a bit of atmosphere, but to be fair we did go on a Sunday evening…I would expect it to buzz midweek.

Babylon (The Roof Gardens, Derry Street, London, W8 5ED) Really nice fresh food and a clean and stylish dining room which was offset against TGI “bonkers” style service – if I may be a shade unkind – and table magicians on a sunday lunch. Horribly night club priced drinks, (£5 for a bottle of peroni and £9 for a vodka with mixer and lime) which ended up presenting us with a lumpy bill for a set price lunch…overall too pricey unless you like yer bling prices!

Le Colombier (145 Dovehouse Street, London, London, SW3 6LB) A wonderful place for relaxed but beautiful food. Limited main course choices for fish eaters, but plenty of delicious options for meat eaters – I would rate the lamb chops as my most favourite dish in town, for what it's worth to you fellow London diner! It has all the charm and feel of an independent restaurant and there is a palpable sense of the dining room being managed expertly throughout service by the two front of house gentlemen. A professional yet relaxed wonderful place.

J Sheekey (28-32 St Martin's Court, London, London, WC2N 4AL) Sadly a bit formulaic, our fish was disappointing (fish and chips and goujons) and we were treated as a bit of an inconvenience at a chain restaurant. A shame as previous visits had been enjoyable…not much magic here!

Shepherd's (Marsham Court, Marsham Street, London, London, SW1P 4LA) We walked in off the street without a booking and were seated straight away in a very welcoming manner. We loved the menu and as my girlfriend is a pescatarian we normally have a limited choice of options but we felt this menu offered her lots of tempting dishes. The food was beautifully presented and all our drinks were brought to us much more promptly than any other restaurant – which drives us to distraction when we have to wait for them! The atmosphere was warm, vibrant, relaxed, fun and understated. This is an absolute gem and we found everything about it was faultless. This restaurant stands head and shoulders above the rest.
