Cinnamon Kitchen (9 Devonshire Square, London, London, EC2M 4WY)

Thought the food was exceptional, and while overall the service was good, a few slips here and there brings the score down (ordering an extra starter that was missed and had to be re-ordered to go with mains being one, and very slow to take our order too). Otherwise, lovely decor, interesting food from a simple menu served beautifully. I will be returning. Lunch for two done properly (ie with wine) and coffee afterwards at £112 isnt too bad.

Hawksmoor Spitalfields (157 Commercial Street, London, London, E1 6BJ)

Went last Friday with some clients. The food, as with all of my visits, was top-notch, producing one of the best steaks in London, and served with mac'n'cheese and triple cooked chips – wonderful! 300g fillet is c£30 and a 600g bone in Sirloin is £28 – so Gaucho esque prices. Sides are £3-4. They also offer a large line of mint julep cocktails which are awesome too. Service was okay (well, good looking!) though with every table full, it was sometimes a little hard to get any attention, such as when ordering the second bottle of red or extra chips! If you like steak and chips, go is the message.

China Tang at The Dorchester Hotel (The Dorchester, 53 Park Lane, London, London, W1K 1QA)

Went with work, thank god, as the bill was unbelievable for what we had. The food isnt too bad, but it didnt really taste any better than your local chinese restaurant, which considering it is 4x or 5x the price, isnt really that great. The decor is nice and the service was good (other reviews i see had really poor service, so maybe we were lucky). Overall, we had a good time, but i wouldnt go running back, and certainly not on my own account!

Tayyabs (83 Fieldgate Street, London, London, E1 1JU)

Fantastic value and some of the quality of the food is just brilliant, but let down by poor service, chaotic table management and being just too busy!
The starters are the best bit, amazing mixed grill with fantastic lamb chops and sizzling chicken tikka (with onions). The easiest way to eat the lamb chops is to order naan bread and create ‘nan napkins’ (my friend Imran created that phrase!) else your fingers will be stained for the rest of the evening. Poppadoms and chutney's were average I'm afraid. Never got to mains depsite numerous visits, having always re-ordered masses of lamb chops and mixed grills. Even for the hungriest person, you will leave full having paid c£12 a head. Brilliant. Also, you can bring your own booze, which also makes it an inexpensive night out.
The issues are the staff barging past you in the rush to serve all the punters, the fact that even when you have booked a table you have to wait sometimes and the fact your clothes stink of curry on your departure. Additionally, it is in a very unattractive part of town. In saying all of that, i have always enjoyed it for a night out and will definitely be going back.

Tamarind (20 Queen Street, London, W1J 5PR)

Having had a shocking time at Trishna (another upmarket Indian) last week, I thought it was time to go back to one of the real pro's. Tuesday lunchtime, set menu of 2 courses for £15 (bargain!) or 3 for £19 (Indian desserts anyone?) and it did not disappoint. The lamb cutlets i had to start with were beautifully cooked, perfectly spiced and larger than what i was expecting. The main of chicken supreme was some of the best chicken i have had in a restaurant in a long time (normally they over cook it and its dry…but not in Tamarind). Service was attentive without being in your face, and the little extras of a pre meal taster and chocolate afterwards with the coffee added to the experience! Well worth going, especially as the set menu is available at both lunchtime and early evening.

Restaurant Critic

Trishna (15-17 Blandford Street, London, London, W1U 3DG)

Not in the same league as the other upmarket Indian restaurants in London. Benares, Tamarind and Veery have nothing to worry about from this overpriced, poorly flavoured and over cooked wannabe. 3 hours to serve a tasting menu says it all really. Save your cash and go to one of the others.
