L'Anima (1 Snowden Street, London, London, EC2A 2DQ)

Editor's pick

I had a lovely lunch at L'Anima last Monday and it was a great way to start the week. I'm a big fan of Francesco Mazzei and certainly was not let down. The interior is a clean and sharp contemporary design, the atmosphere was very city-boy orientated but being in the heart of the city you would expect this. Friends and clients have informed me however that the evenings are more relaxed and has a good buzz to it. I started with a delicious, Black Angus beef carpaccio with pickled wild mushrooms and parmigiano – the taste of the mushrooms contrasted nicely with the melt in the mouth beef, one of the best carpaccios I've had. I moved onto the slow roast black pork belly which was divine – tender enough to fall apart when probed and a lovely golden crackling. As I wasn't in a rush my dining partner and I went through a couple of desserts, the pistachio and chocolate iced truffle being a particular favourite – the type of dessert that gives a big smile on your face and an even bigger one in your tummy – for rich chocolate lovers this is a must. I'm planning on returning as soon as possible for dinner.

Tooting Tram & Social (46-48 Mitcham Road, London, SW17 9NA)

I'm very sorry but I have to say I preferred the appallingly awful student venue this used to be – at least it had an honest feel about it where as this place seems so completely pretentious and contrived it's impossible to enjoy. Service gets an 8 mark but then again it's not hard to provide good bar service. It would fit in nicely if located in the “Nappy Valley” of Northcote Road but seems very out of place. Last time I went I noticed a sign about bag searches on the door – not sure if that's still the policy but in any case I will be avoiding.

Sake No Hana (23 St James's Street, London, London, SW1A 1HA)

I've dined a couple of times recently at Sake No Hana and am glad for it. I first visited the venue not too long after it opened and it was pleasant then, but I wouldn't have rushed back. A year later and they seemed to have cured the previous issues – with service, some of the dishes and the non existent wine list. On my last visit I dined with a group of close colleagues and was blown away. We did slightly over-order but had decided to sample as much as possible and managed to get through a grand total of 24 dishes. The starters of King crab and cucumber sunomono, Chicken and kanpyo maki roll were particular favourites and mains of Miso Chilean seabass in houba leaf, Red king crab in ponzu and Wagyu beef with mountain yam were all dishes I'd quite happily mug my colleagues for. Prices can get astronomical for larger tables so while I personally can't afford to eat there as often as I'd like I will return as often as possible. Although they do now have a wine selection I'd urge diners to skip this and speak with the Sake sommelier who picked the perfect choices to go with our feast. Service was excellent and the grace and delicacy of the waitresses made the experience all the more authentic (In an uber-chic contemporary environment of course!).

Nahm at The Halkin (The Halkin, 5 Halkin Street, London, SW1X 7DJ)

Nahm is one of my favourites for a little bit of posh Thai. The dining room can be a little quiet sometimes but that can also be a bit of a blessing as you sit back and relax to enjoy some of the finest Thai cuisine in town. David Thompson so obviously puts so much time and effort into the menu creating a plethora or creative and delicious dishes. The staff are incredibly helpful especially when you need a little more information about the dishes and their tastes. The beautiful private dining room is another big selling point for me and is perfect for a larger but still intimate diner. The sommelier's are also very good at finding the perfect match for the food and will not always point to the pricier selections if asked for guidance. I wish they did deliveries but as they don't I wouldn't be averse to staying a night at the hotel.

The Ritz Restaurant (The Ritz London, 150 Piccadilly, London, W1J 9BR)

Editor's pick

I was quite nervous on my first trip to the Ritz. It is after all an institution and a benchmark for the best of British (although it's French food). While it is still ultra-formal and very old school I have to applaud the entire team for the dining experience they provide. The service is the finest I have ever seen – the waiters have an almost ESP-like ability and seem to know what you want before you do! As for the food it was presented with perfection the warm salad of native Lobster with duck egg & caviar was divine and the main of Sea bass with artichoke one of the best fish dishes I've ever had. Atmosphere wise I did find it a little too stuffy but that's purely a reflection on my tastes and not the restaurant itself. Prices are relatively high but reflect the standard of the food and service. One for a special occasion – perhaps with the olds.

Lucky Voice Private Karaoke (52 Poland Street, London, W1F 7NQ)

Editor's pick

Lucky Voice is another of my guilty secrets – a great venue for a night out before hitting a club, living out your pop singing fantasies has never been easier. The rooms are smart and well equipped with microphones and props and a little buzzer keeps the bar service flowing when you need to sooth your sore throat after pretending your Elvis on his Vegas comeback. Plenty of rooms for varying sizes of group and a largish bar for when it all becomes too much. My only gripe is that the main bar itself doesn't take cash and all drinks are charged to the card that booked the room which can cause a few problems when it's time to go as they never seem to keen to split the bill on several cards. They have every song you will want to sing and if they don't you can request it through the website.

Maze (10-13 Grosvenor Square, London, London, W1K 6JP)

I was lucky enough to be invited to join a colleague to sample the Chef's Table experience at Maze and have to say without a doubt it was the most amazing dining experience I have ever had. The entire experience is meticulously put together and the selection of dishes is fantastic. We were asked for any likes or dislikes prior to the meal and let the Kitchen team, supervised by Jason Atherton come up with 10 dishes of pure heaven. With a matching selection of wines with every 2 courses a tour of the Kitchen and one of our table press-ganged into cooking one of the courses for us, it was a mixture of dining and theatricals. The price for this experience doesn't come cheap but after trying this culinary delight I think for a special occasion (and considering the excellence of the meal all round) it's well worth it. The atmosphere has been marked very high because of the company I was with and be warned it's a long long meal so go with your best friends and if lunching cancel all your afternoon appointments.

Hakkasan (8 Hanway Place, London, London, W1T 1HD)

Editor's pick

Hakksan has been a favourite of mine for years – very lively and buzzy (sometimes too much) I always book for the Ling Ling area as I find it to be so much more spacious, comfortable and a little less loud. With regards to the food I don't think I've ever had a disappointing dish but do in honesty tend to stick to similar dishes that I know I'll enjoy. Pricewise it is expensive especially if your brain decides to let your stomach order as it is easy to order too much and therefore overspend. I'd also suggest trying (I'm sure they still do it) the special Peking Duck & Caviar menu for a special treat – it's very expensive and needs to be pre-ordered 24 hours in advance but it's oh so good and definitely a good option for a special occasion.

Le Caprice (Arlington House, Arlington Street, London, London, SW1A 1RJ)

Another of my particular favourites Le Caprice never lets me down – Slick service and welcoming staff instantly put you at ease and allow you to proceed with enjoying some of the best comfort food on offer. The crispy Duck salad is always a favourite for me as is the beer battered Haddock with minted mushy peas. Getting in can sometimes be difficult at short notice but if I'm wanting a casual but nice dinner then dining at the bar counter is always an option I'd keep in mind..

Kai (65 South Audley Street, London, W1K 2QU)

Kai seems to be forgotten in favour of the flashy Chinese venues such as Hakkasan and China Tang however I would urge people to try Kai out. The food is excellent – presentation on some dishes can be particularly interesting (such as the lamb shank starter – an odd choice but it works so well). I was told the Hot and Sour soup was the best I'll have ever had and to be honest – they were right (In fact I hear this from many people who have been). I think the atmosphere suffers a little as it's more formal than flashy like the above mentioned venues but will return as often as I can. Service is also one of it's outstanding high points and you are made to feel so welcome upon entering the venue.

The Ivy (1-5 West Street, London, London, WC2H 9NQ)

I'm probably one of the few who find the Ivy overrated – It's pleasant, has a good buzz and the food is pretty good however I feel compared to it's siblings in Caprice Holdings it doesn't deliver. 45 minute waits for my table don't help and neither does feeling rushed through the meal as they are obviously expecting another table. I want to like it but quite simply find it to be very average. (I'll get my coat…)

Yauatcha (15 Broadwick Street, London, London, W1F 0DL)

One of my favourites in town I find Yauatcha to be excellent and always a place to visit with friends from out of town. Food is superb and consistent – the selection on the menu means there is always plenty to choose from. Service can very occasionally be an issue however at the worst I'd say it's passable and have had more instances of excellent service than not so good. I never find the turn times to be a problem and If I need longer I'll book late as tables are often not required back. I have had lunch, afternoon tea and dinner there and think this restaurant offers the best value Michelin Starred food in town.

Asia de Cuba at St Martins Lane Hotel (St Martins Lane Hotel, 45 St Martin's Lane, London, London, WC2N 4HX)

It may no longer be the coolest or hippest venue in town, but in the 30+ times I've dined here over the years I've never been let down. The atmosphere is always electric and loud and the food consistantly good. The Pot Roast Pork, Thai Beef Salad are particular favourites and tend to be repeated each time I go. The additional pull of the Light Bar as well makes it a great venue.

Scott's (20 Mount Street, London, London, W1K 2HE)

Scott's is hands-down my favourite seafood restaurant. Service is excellent – friendly but professional and the food is to die for. Would dine here every lunchtime if my wallet could afford it. This is the standard all London restaurants should strive for. Always a pleasure to visit.
