Reply to “Christmas day lunch” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

I'm toying with the Idea of Marcus Wareing which if I hear correctly is under £100pp although may be difficult to get a table if it is that good value. More

Reply to “Three cheers for D&D for binning automatic service charges!” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

Finally – It's a great idea. Let's face it we all know that very rarely the extra £35 or so that gets added to the bill for service goes directly to the staff so think it's about time. I'm not a mean guy but never really enjoyed having to leave another £20 so I know the staff actually receive something for their hard work. The only time I actually asked a manager to subtract the charge so I could leave a cash equivalent for the staff he looked like I'd slapped his mother. More

Reply to “Please Please please can we have a blanket ban on Mobile…” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I think pretty much the increased volume? People always seem to shout over the background noise. As I said maybe I'm old fashioned in that I go to a restaurant to enjoy a meal and the company rather than sit there on my mobile talking to someone. I think it's all about consideration to others – if I couldn't hear people then I wouldnt have an issue – unless I hear that dammed crazy frog ringtone. More

Reply to “Please Please please can we have a blanket ban on Mobile…” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

Onetime I really got irritated it was almost like that comedy sketch with the guy who has the giant mobile “ HI, I CAN'T TALK RIGHT NOW I'M IN A RESTAURANT…YEAH IT'S LOVELY…OH REALLY…THATS NICE…YEAH…YEAH…AHA…” and so on for about 5 minutes. I saw a waiter approach the table presumably to ask him to keep it down and the guy holds his hand up to the waiter and said “I'm on a call” and then went back to his conversation. Shocking. More

Thread “Please Please please can we have a blanket ban on Mobile…” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

Why oh why do people feel the need to have conversations on their mobile while dining – I'd understand if the conversations were along the lines of “What the house is on fire? I'll come straight away” but sadly it tends to be very monotonous, dull and intrusive to other diners in my opinion. People decided that my smoking in restaurants was not on and anti-social which I totally understand but personally I think using mobiles in restaurants is just as bad – it really winds me up and that's never a good idea when there's plenty of booze and razor sharp steak knives nearby. I'm I over reacting and just getting old or do others feel the same way? Any other diners habits that make your blood boil? More

Reply to “Excellent city restaurant please!” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

Personally I love L'Anima just tucked behind Liverpool Street Station – Fab food, good service and great ambience – I posted a review sometime ago. Very highly reccomended! More

Reply to “Last-minute invitations” (in Venues & Events talk )

It depends really – From a work perspective I wouldn't feel like an afterthought but for a social purpose perhaps. I'll always accept late invitations from client if time permits – as PJC states a late invite is better than none at all! More

Thread “Turn Times… greed or necessity?” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I'm always having arguments with friends about turn times at restaurants – Personally I believe they are annoying , but also necessary – after all if a restaurant can only do one sitting, profits go down and prices go up but at the same time it would be nice to eat at another time except 7.00 or 9.00pm. I guess if you are told you are required to vacate by a certain time you have the choice to choose to go elsewhere less restrictive. Any thoughts from you guys? More

Reply to “Chef's tables” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

I agree with Laughing C – Maze was one of the most amazing experiences I've had – especially when one of my table were pulled into the kitchen to cook one of our courses! Yes very expensive but for a special occasion a great choice. More

Saf is the place to be I hear – not really my scene but my vegan friends swear by it. More

I find Hush (Lancashire Court) to do the trick for the summer months – It's not new or anything out of this world but you do feel like you are somewhere other than the heart of London. The Terrace (Holland St) is great as well if you fancy going a little west. More

Reply to “Caviar – what is all the fuss about?” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I see where Felix is coming from – I can't see the fuss or taste the taste – but then again maybe that's my smoking habit spoiling it. More

Reply to “Anyone been to Eastside Inn?” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I'm going to head to the Eastside as soon as possible – I've missed Bjorn VDH as a chef on the scene since he left the greenhouse. More

Reply to “Heston's price-hike” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I think it's £130 for the tasting menu and + £65-£195 for the matching wines? Although I have no doubt the food is awesome I'd prefer to spend my money on food of my choice. Everyone I know who has been recently has said it's amazing. I don't think I'd personally go unless they reinstate the a la carte. I guess you have to take the Fat Duck as an experience rather than going out for dinner…the 12.5% service charge makes me think though! More
