Tried out the new cafe, reopened after the recent fire, and the restaurant is now more spacious, light and airy than before. Very clean lines, almost new england look about it. Wanted a light lunch, and I tucked into a Beef carpaccio, and my lunch partner, the roasted ham with chilli jam. Shame you have to pay for bread as an extra, and not even offered, you have to ask for it as an addition. The breads are wonderful though. Came only with olive oil, and no butter. Overall, food was good, but portions small for the price. Service is efficient, but not warm or welcoming.

The Kingham Plough (Kingham, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, OX7 6YD) I've eaten here a few times and have always had a pleasant experience. The fillet steaks are to die for but steep at £22.00., and their thrice cooked chips are lovely and crisp. On my last visit, a thursday evening at 7.30pm, their specials board was depleted, and I was hard pushed to find something on the menu that fitted an august evening!! I plumbed for the Lamb Pudding, which although was a suet pudding was remarkably light, and served with “black cabbage” which were spring greens by any other name. My friend's chicken did look very ordinary, although she said it was very nice. Service was a little slower than normal, and wasn't too happy with a big dog being allowed in the dining area. I know we were seated in the bar, but it's hardly a drinking pub. Bit disappointed this time around.

The Fox (Lower Oddington, Gloucestershire, GL56 0UR) Have had several meals at The Fox over the past four years and always the food and service are very good. It was busy evening, but the service was efficient and friendly and professional. The fresh grilled sardines with garlic and herb butter were gorgeous, if not just a tad too much herb butter. The rump of lamb was pink, juicy and tender with crisp vegetables, their steak and kidney pie the best ever tasted and the desserts generous and delighftul…I had their cherry and almond tart., although wasn't expecting the cherries to have stones still in them and nearly broke a tooth…be warned! Jug of iced water placed on the table without prompting. Disappointing that they still do not have a coffee machine and only do filter coffee. They say they are investing in one soon. Also the wine glasses set on the table are a bit utilitarian. Ok for water, but not for wine. Although a gastro pub and the bar is shared with diners but there is always a core of locals who still pop in for a pint. Several french diners were in, so their reputation quite global for a county gastropub. Set in a pretty village, worth a trip out for lunch and dinner, and a lovely courtyard garden to sit out when the weather is accomodating. £35 per head for 3 courses and wine. Enjoy!

Lapstone (Westington Hill, Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire, GL55 6UR) Arrived with 4 friends for lunch on a saturday. The cafe was very busy, but the staff were helpful and friendly and said they would come find us browsing in the store as soon as a table was available. We were all delighted with our selection. Pea and Mint soup, roast beef sandwich with delicious granary bread and horseradish, and a meat antipasto to share. Perfect lunchtime food and served promptly and friendly service with a smile. Has a sunny garden to sit out but unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperating.

The Swan at Southrop (Southrop, Lechlade, Gloucestershire, GL7 3NU) The starter of broad bean and pancetta with goats cheese was very bland., the beans hard and the cheese hardly melted. The chicken caeser salad with chicken wings was sickly and the parmesan crisps were burnt. The fresh fish sat on a bed of vegetables and was smothered in olive oil, and that was all you could taste. A very hushed atmosphere, you felt everyone was listening to your conversation. This restaurant came highly recommended, but felt very let down by the overall experience. A nice setting, but not worth the drive.

The Old Butchers (7 Park Street, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, GL54 1AQ) The Old Butcher's is an excellent restaurant…well run, friendly and unpretentious, and the food is always great…local produce, fresh fish brought up from Cornwall, home made breads and usually comes in around £35 to £40 per head with 2 courses, wine and coffee. The interior is modern, with an outside front terrace to sit and have a drink. Reservations are a must especially at weekends. My favourite in the Cotswold.
