Hasn’t rated any restaurants this year.

Smithfield Tandoori (12 Smithfield Street, London, EC1A 9LA)

This is one of my favourite Indian restaurants and it's all thanks to the Gosht Belliram, which bursts with flavour. Other dishes are good too, but this is the one I come back to. It's a very pleasant environment – perhaps a little old fashioned, but that makes quite a nice contrast to Brick Lane curry houses. Particularly recommended after a pint at the Fox and Anchor, which is a very fine pub indeed.

Roast (Floral Hall, Stoney Street, London, SE1 1TL)

I went to Roast for breakfast and have heard that it may be better at other times of day. However, a watery poached egg is unforgiveable in a place that charges this much. If it had been served with a smile, I might have forgiven it a little more readily. The rest of the food was fine, but unexceptional and the coffee was OK. The location is, however, fantastic, so perhaps they assume that will distract people from the mediocrity of the restaurant.
