While the venue does have it's charms – especially considering the urban surroundings of Shoreditch – the Hoxton Grill relies too heavily on its Soho Hotels Group DNA. Service is O.K. but not consistent and then there is what the food: meat dishes are a bit better, but steer clear of the fish which was on the verge of catastrophic. All this is a shame as this part of London would need a place like the Hoxton Grill aims to be. I suggest a drink at the Hoxton Hotel's bar instead – dinner definitively elsewhere.

Cactus Blue (86 Fulham Road, London, SW3 6HR) This bar / restaurant is not very nice. While this area of the Fulham Road would need a good cocktail bar, Cactus Blue fills this void with the least possible gastronomic panache. The Mexican “Tapas” are best avoided as are complicated cocktails. Pity for a location with so much potential.

The Windmill (6-8 Mill Street, London, W1S 2AZ) The pies here are next to none and great value too! Not so much a Gastropub as a Pub with a dining room, the Windmill offers a sit-down meal at a reasonable price for Mayfair and doesn't disappoint. Why can't more pubs be like this?

Bibendum (Michelin House, 81 Fulham Road, London, SW3 6RD) I like Bibendum. It has been there for ever and of course over the long term there are some ups and some downs, yet it has always delivered and has a really good balance between high end dining and a nice non-pretentious style. I sometimes feel it is reviewd harshly because it is compared to the wrong kind of restaurants. The Oyster Bar downstairs is fun in the warmer months and staff are always friendly and make everything possible. An underrated institution.

Troubadour (265 Old Brompton Road, London, SW5 9JA) A great place! So laid back and friendly that one can forget all the stresses of the capital. The food is good and fresh, while it can get busy and slightly cramped at times. Yet the opening hours are as good as the variety of dishes on offer. The atmosphere is hard to be beaten and reminds me of the bohemian cafés of Paris and Vienna. A great place well worth a trip to this slightly less known part of Chelsea.

La Trouvaille (12a Newburgh Street, London, W1F 7RR) La Trouvaille, is a great little restaurant, which is truly independent and staffed by very well trained staff mainly from France. It is the little things which set La Trouvaille apart, the bread, the wine list and the cheese. Everything is very high quality. The kitchen can get rushed at lunchtimes, but the overall level is outstanding. Who said good value fine food didn't exist in London?!

Bob Bob Ricard (1 Upper James Street, London, London, W1F 9DF) A good place and open until 3am, which is rare and welcome in the capital. Service is very friendly and professional. The interior is a question of taste, but quirky and gives the place a premium feel. Food is good, while not great but the competition is fast asleep after midnight. Those who travel a lot – or go out partying for that matter will understand.

The Wolseley (160 Piccadilly, London, W1J 9EB) The Wolseley is a very special place. Apart from the acoustics there is very little wrong with it, even the price tags are acceptable given the location and standards. Food is seasonal and ususally very well executed, but in recent times a fault or two have occured. Still a dependable option and one which should be considered for a special dinner. The opening times make it all the better for post-theatre or post-Opera dinners.

Locanda Locatelli (8 Seymour Street, London, London, W1H 7JZ) Locanda Locatelli serves the best Italian food outside Italy I know. It is seldom that a celebrity chef so directly delivers what he promises. The restaurant is a true pleasure, of course this level comes at a price but it is a truly very good effort. The menu covers the classics but allows for some slightly more innovative dishes as well. A top pick in London.

Cocoon (65 Regent Street, London, W1B 4EA) Cocoon has a great location, just off (and overlooking) Regent Street. It's interior must have been striking when new but has lost its appeal. The clientele is very heterogenous, service slow and the food hit and miss. Unfortunately the bar is in the middle with cocktail guests standing around the tables of diners. A flawed concept and an example of truly over priced “pan-Asia” cooking.

Babylon (The Roof Gardens, Derry Street, London, W8 5SA) A case of black and white. The food is good. The service too – sometimes. But it all doesn't matter because of the shere wow factor of Mr. Branson's signature Restaurant/Private Member's Club. Recently the menu has changed and taken on a more sophisticated tone, which has seen prices rocket. This is a pity because before it used to be refreshingly reasonable. Yet on a recent late dinner apart from slightly shakey service – which one half expects – it performed nicely. The views are among the best in the capital and as a diner one can shake off some calories at the nightclub!

The Compass (58 Penton St, London, N1 9PZ) Restaurants and Gastropubs are not that plentiful in this part of London. The Compass is a good place, but a bit pricey for what it offers. Produce is sourced in the home counties, which might explain part of the hefty bill, but the wine list is also not cheap. The price aside, it is the kind of place you wish well: a bunch of turly independent entrepreneurs. I hope they stay on course.

Dim T Kensington (154-156 Gloucester Road, London, SW7 4TD) Very good place for a quick lunch or dinner. The food is good and less heavy than in many other Chinese restaurants in the same price range. Service is always friendly and seems to make an effort. Dim T fills a gap in the Asian dining landscape and offers good quality at almost unbeatable prices. Having tried most, the Gloucester Road branch is the best of the lot.

Eight Over Eight (392 King's Road, London, SW3 5UZ) Eight over eight is a classic example of a restaurant resting on its laurels. The formerly less known sibling of E&O in Notting Hill started drawing large crowds and instead of rising to the challenge, it started dropping its standards. This is very dangerous when serving a cuisine which is highly dependent on execution and good service. A pity.
