Hix Belgravia (20 Chesham Place, London, London, SW1X 8HQ)

Editor's pick

The ingredients and cooking are excellent. The highlight was the Prawn curry, a delightful dish. Service is also very good indeed. Unfortunately I really dislike the space. Despite it's separate entrance on Pont Street it's really little more than the cafe for the foyer of the Thomson hotel it adjoins. It's very cramped indeed so I was surprised that the prices matched those of the more sumptuous Browns.

The Delaunay (55 Aldwych, London, London, WC2B 4BB)

After the failure of St Alban, where they tried to change the formula, the owners have adhered closely to The Wolseley model. So, if you don't like the Wolseley stay away but, if like me you enjoy The Wolseley you'll love Delaunay. The designer has done a fantastic job reconfiguring the space previously occupied by Bank and has created a very impressive, if slightly serious environment. Service is excellent and even on a Saturday evening the owner was patrolling the floor to ensure the restaurant ran smoothly. The food was good rather than exceptional but the menu contains a few unusual items such as Frankfurters and salt beef sandwiches.

On my second visit the atmosphere was better as it was full and buzzy, much like the Wolseley. The food was also better. My choices of 70's classics; Prawn cocktail and Chicken Kiev were both excellent, certainly better than they ever tasted back in the day! This visit confirmed my initial believe that this is a restaurant of substance as well as style that will become a London institution.

L'Anima (1 Snowden Street, London, London, EC2A 2DQ)

This must be the best Italian restaurant in London at the moment (sorry Mr Locatelli), tucked away behind Liverpool Street station, it's well worth the trip from the West End. The menu contains a number of unusual dishes and the cooking is terrific. Ocaisionally the boorish behaviour of the local ‘City boys’ pervades the otherwise calm atmosphere.

Novikov (50 Berkeley Street, London, W1J 8HA)

This is a huge restaurant and even though the kitchen is coping on timing and quality the Front of house isn't. They need to quickly poach an experienced manager from the empires of Corbin/King or Carling, organisations who understand the ethos of service. The scene at reception when we arrived for our Saturday evening booking in the Italian restaurant was chaotic with a queue of people waiting for tables. It was obvious they were behind in service and (probably) overbooked! Nonetheless the resourceful young man in front of me achieved a table despite no booking with a £50 tip to the hostess! We were eventually seated, and the service from our charming waitress (Carla) was terrific. around us however there was continued chaos, the bus boys, waiters, clearers, endless managers ran around arguing among themselves all evening. This is the buzziest, best people watching spot in town and the food is fine. The chef is coping brilliantly as he must do more covers a night than he did in a month at his previous and excellent local,Rosmarino.
The wine waiter was flummoxed when asked to recommend a ‘crisp dry white’, from the lengthy list, but, to his credit went for help immediately, although it reflects a woeful lack of training. At the end of the evening we asked to go into the lounge and were told by the surly manager that he would let us jump the queue once he had let in the 40 people already waiting!! So, despite having run up a decent bill preference was given to a few Essex boys wanting to buy a beer.

Moro (34-36 Exmouth Market, London, EC1R 4QE)

Consistently excellent. The only possible criticism is it's location, which if you don't live work in Islington probably makes it inconvenient, but it's well worth the inconvenience. The changing menu makes it a great place to visit as often as possible as you're never going top be bored with the unusual flavours. The wine list is long|(ish) and always full of unusual offerings at decent prices and the atmosphere is very buzzy!

34 (34 Grosvenor Square, London, London, W1K 2HD)

A superb addition to London dining. A beautifully designed room and welcoming and attentive staff make for a great start to an evening. There was an excellent jazz trio playing in the corner which further built the atmosphere. The menu is an interesting blend of classics and excellently executed. if service and cooking were that good in opening week I can only imagine how great it will be once they become comfortable in this plush Mayfair salon. MY only concern is how hard it's going to be getting a return table once word get's out that this is ‘THE’ new place!

Racine (239 Brompton Road, London, London, SW3 2EP)

If only you could still find ‘Old school’ restaurants like this in Paris. The interior is not inviting and the service can be a bit stiff and too French but once the food arrives both of these slights can be forgiven. A recent dinner included kidneys in a mustard sauce served with possibly the best mashed potatoes of the year. The sea bass was similarly enjoyed as was a starter of Lardon Salad.

Zucca (184 Bermondsey Street, London, London, SE1 3TQ)

My only complaint about this fabulous restaurant is the difficulty getting a table. It's so good it's always full. The menu changes constantly and is always full of interesting takes on Italian standards. The wine list is extensive and unusual, supported by an extremely knowlegable sommelier. Come to Bermondsey to visit Zucca and tag on a visit to White Cube!

Tinello (87 Pimlico Road, London, London, SW1W 8PH)

As a massive fan of Mr Locatelli I was disappointed. I used to be a regular at the venue before the change of management and was really looking forward to it being even better. I think they've done a great job on the decoration but a combination of surly service and sloppy seasoning damaged an otherwise enjoyable Saturday evening. Previously the restaurant was always packed now on Halloween Saturday it was only half full.

Massimo (Corinthia Hotel London, Whitehall Place, London, SW1A 2BD)

The room is stunning and the quality of the food and service matched. I went on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was busy diners still arriving at 10pm, so a consistently good atmosphere. If you're looking to impress someone, I can think of few better restaurants in London. Cooking and presentation were excellent and the Sommelier very impressive.

Aurelia (13-14 Cork Street, London, W1S 3NS)

Give it a few weeks to settle down. The kitchen is fully functioning with the result that the food was terrific and once the service standards match this will become another stellar restaurant. It's a really stylish restaurant and should match the success of the group's Le Petite Maison.
I found the sharing concept overdone and unnecessary. Especially, when the two mains of scallops and leg of lamb were placed on the table at the same time. The lamb which was beautifully cooked came with no accompaniment whatsoever!
The service issues ranged from wine not arriving until waiter, sommelier and Maitre D had been chased and starters served. Despite the supposed sharing concept waiters constantly interrupted to remove serving plates.
It is important to choose which atmosphere you prefer: the basement, which is buzzy and comes with table cloths or the ground floor which is a nice room but less atmospheric with marble topped tables.
Despite the shocking service this should become a great venue.

The Gilbert Scott (St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel, Euston Road, London, London, NW1 2AR)

The new hotel @ St Pancras has been stunningly designed qand decorated, so imagine the surprise to find it's flagship restaurant looking so dreary! You get the impression the decorator used every scrap of leftovers from his last several projects, as nothing fits together. Fortunately the evening wasn't entirely wasted as the cooking was sublime. There are a number of old fashioned dishes which have been ‘modernised’ so skilfully I wonder why they ever went out of fashion. The wine list was good sand reasonable as well.
Just a pity about the atrocious decoration otherwise I'd like to make it a new regular!

Boyd's Brasserie (8 Northumberland Avenue, London, WC2N 5BY)

The cooking is really rather good but despite a lovely setting the restaurant is essentially the hotel foyer . The redecoration extremely bland, although the lighting and original marble pillars create a good effect. There is an interesting choice of little dishes for starters and we mixed these; ox cheek and beetroot tortelloni, and salt beef with a regulat ox cheek starter. Mains were the signature dish of sussex chicken and the daily special of Mackeral with lime dressing. The chicken was a little dry but everything else was very well executed. Desserts were blansd and un-inspiring. obviously our palates differ from the mainstream. Unfortunately this interesting restaurant is let down by it's locationwhich is the foyer of an old hotel located off Northumberland Avenue. If you're in the neighbourhood and don't care about ambience I recommend it but probably not worth a trip across town.

Pizza East (56 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6JJ)

The concept is excellent and certainly it was booked to the rafters when I visited early on a Saturday evening. In order to cram extra bodies in Nick Jones has copied the communal table policy which is disliked so much in Shoreditch House. to ensure no one exceeds their space he's even introduced stools attached to the table so you can't move them. I think he used the measuring guide from Ryan Air then reduced it a bit to get a few extra seats in. the ingredients allcated per pizza redefine the phrase minimalist. Overall the impression is of a greedy restauranter. Great atmosphere, poor value. There must be plenty of other Pizza places in Shoreditch – try them !

Dean Street Townhouse & Dining Room (69-71 Dean Street, London, London, W1D 3SE)

This is a n extremely busy restaurant serving a well executed retro influenced menu. The kitchen excells in mainting excellent quality with so many covers. it's completely let down by waiters ‘with attitude’ who simply don't seem to care. I've never seen as many glasses brocken in my life as did on the consecutive evenings I dined there last week. it sems they need help from one of Mr Carings more mature restaurants
