Bonds (5 Threadneedle Street, London, EC2R 8AY)

My first visit was today, 13 January 2011. For the most part I was hugely disappointed. Not with the food – it was very well cooked, though typically City-stingy in terms of portion size. Service was the main bugbear: just awful. After the perfectly acceptable coat-check/entry experience, one was shown through the door and broadly left to flounder, despite there seeming to be more staff (who must have recently had surliness training) than clients. Table wasn't ready so shown to the bar area. Ordered drinks but just as they were arriving the table became ready. Must've been left looking at menus – or not, as we'd already decided after 5mins – for at least 25 mins, before order was taken. Wait between courses way too long. Had other tables' wine in the ice bucket beside our table and then nearly got rugby tackled by a waitress when we accidentally nearly poured another table's wine. Pretty shoddy experience all in all. Must be 50 restaurants offering a better time for less money within a mile radius. Won't be going back, even if someone else is paying.
