Ilia (96 Draycott Avenue, London, SW3 3AD)

Two things to remember on your visit. First, the service is haphazard and has the potential to make your evening a disaster. Second, stay away from all the ‘specials’. They are lovely but priced at 50-75% more than the equivalent from the regular menu. They won't tell you that but you'll find out at the end of the meal.
Otherwise a thumbs up.

December 2011 revisit.
Having run the previous restaurant on this site into the ground, the owner is now destroying this one. It's not remotely as interesting as it was when it first opened. Avoid.

5 Pollen St (5 Pollen Street, London, London, W1S 1NE)

Lots of noise. An older crowd. The scene is set for what could be an amazing meal in this buzzy New York style restaurant. Sadly, the food is just not up to scratch. It's bland and uninventive and presented in a fussy atmosphere. Think Nello's New York but with much worse food and you get the idea. My food (fish) was cold as it was for the others at the table .. do we send it back? Not if we have already waited 45 minutes.

Puddings were indescribably awful. I mean really bad. They were all discarded. Restaurant didn't even ask why.
It really is a lovely room but food is uninspiring and flaccid. This place either has to up its game or get out of town.

It's a big miss on the London restaurant scene.

Scott's (20 Mount Street, London, W1K 2HE)

It is hard to keep standards up in these recessionary times as indeed those who frequent Gordon Ramsey's restaurants have found to their dismay. Unlike the Ramsey empire, Scott's is a one trick pony. It only needs to produce fresh fish dishes at a consistent level.

Unfortunately this is not always the case. I was fortunate enough to have an almost acceptable sea bass – well the fish seemed fresh but was swimming in a ‘soup’ of butter that pretty much nullified any real taste. Why does Scott's need to do this? Are they incapable of producing simple dishes? My partner had a DOver sole which she proclaimed was the Scott's signature dish. Again, it was swimming in butter. I took one bite, turned the rubbery morsel around in my mouth and proclaimed it to be cooked from frozen.

Can anybody corroborate that Scott's sells frozen fish at these fantastic mark ups?

The service is excellent.
