Read the thread July 2009Both are good choices, otherwise The Gingerman or Seven Dials (but neither perhaps smart enough?). Though of course the best-of-all place to eat in Brighton is Bardsley's fish and chip restaurant (bardleys-fishandchips.co.uk): where else can you tuck in to battered haddock, mushy peas and onion rings while knocking back bubbly from a Veuve Clicquot ice bucket? Read the thread July 2009I'd like to make the most of this sunny weather before it rains at the weekend but I don't want to traipse off to the City or Docklands for decent outside seating. Does anyone know any decent alfresco spots in Soho / Mayfair / Fitzrovia? Ideally something a little more than some cramped tables shoved together on a pavement please. And preferably somewhere not too expensive. Thanks! More
Read the thread July 2009I'd go for Club Gascon, but only because you can eat course after course of foie gras. I've eaten in both parts of Eastside, the more casual bistro is the nicer space, but the menu is on the short side. The food in the formal dining room is impressive but bland surroundings and (in the early days at least) very slow service. More
Read the thread July 2009the chef's table at Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's is the best, it's right in the middle of the action so you can actually see the chefs cooking up-close rather than through a window or hatch (though I'm not sure who's heading up the kitchens there now Sarge is in charge of Gordon's cookbooks). Marcus Wareing also has an excellent chef's table. Both I think charge a fairly steep minimum spend per head though. More
Read the thread July 2009I think Saf in Shoreditch is the only dedicated vegan restaurant in London. And if it's not, it's certainly the smartest. More
Read the thread July 2009New Russian import Goodman on Maddox Street W1 is excellent, though they have a very odd habit of not cooking anything rare (this has happened to both me and a friend of mine). More
Read the thread July 2009My favourite is La Fontaine de Mars near the Eiffel Tower – everything you want from a French restaurant – checked tablecloths; duck confit; ile flottante, all of that – plus nice outside tables too (by la fontaine itself). It's one of chef Simon Hopkinson's favourite places to eat. More
