Reply to “What is the point of public reviews…” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

Dear Julie,
I agree with your analysis and just like you and Arabella, I have also stopped using Squaremeal in favor of food blogs, since most reviews published here are so obviously fake. Twitter is indeed not for everyone – myself included – it's imposing, relentless and daft. More

Reply to “To River Cafe or not to River Cafe…” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

Honestly I would not call the food at The River Cafe sublime. It's pretty decent, but I'd recommend L'anima for an outstanding Italian evening. The food is very flavorful yet incredibly delicately prepared, the wine list is extensive and the service personable and attentive. More

That's an insult to the glorious gift that are fish! It's totally annoying – I don't even read reviews here anymore, most of them are fake anyway (grunt, mumble). Christopher J, may I recommend some excellent bloggers such as Londoneater, Eatlikeagirl and Dos Hermannos. At least you know there is no sleeping editor behind their reviews that allows this phoney baloney. Or the top few foodies here should just get together and do their own blog. More

Reply to “Square Meal 3 Stars – Accurate ?” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your answer to the original post, but I'd like an answer too.
Since personally I don't eat at French restaurants in London (I also live in Paris and get my french fix there) and consume most of my restaurant meals at pan Asian restaurants, I'd like to hear your position on why those don't seem to deserve a serious visit by one of your reviewers. In Europe, London is famous for offering the highest standard of Asian cuisine (not French or Italian which is better in their respected countries) so surely they deserve to be called ‘must-visits’ too? In fact when my husband and I go for business dinners with clients from abroad their must visits are always Japanese or pan Asian.
I'm not trying to be rude or imply that you aren't serious, but if you have a dozen very bad reviews for a restaurant, how can it still be listed as one of the best?

Regards,
Miss Sushi More

Reply to “New Year Eve Dinner 2010” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

Dear Zeus,
Celebrating New years eve in a big city restaurant can be strange for a couple. If you go to a real classy place such as Petrus for example, you will most probably be the youngest patrons there and bored to death. And if you go to a happening cool place, you'll spend a fortune on terrible food.
Instead, a nice alternative is to go to Selfridges or Harrods Food hall and get smoked salmon, champagne, foie gras or whatever it is you like and celebrate at home. My husband and I did it once and it was perfect. And with the money you'll save yup can get your wife something nice. More

Reply to “Anyone know of a chic Japanese / Pan Asian Restaurant in…” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

Oh no Sabrina, I completely disagree. The food at Buddha bar is hideous. The drinks are good though. It used to be ok ten years ago or so, but now it's invaded by palatally challenged tourists. Not a place to impress posh business types. When in Paris stick to French food (or north African food). I do like your reviews though, you're on my favorites list. More

Reply to “Square Meal 3 Stars – Accurate ?” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

To be honest there are many things I disagree with on Squaremeals website. I haven't eaten at Arbutus, neither have I had the pleasure to sample Corrigan's food yet, so I can't comment on your exact comparison. Personally I am drawn to pan-Asian food and especially Japanese. What really puzzles me is how ‘Nozomi’ (a true abomination of a restaurant) is listed under best Japanese next to Umu and Zuma. And it isn't the only example, there are many others. It completely discredits this website as a reliable source for unbiased and knowledgeable restaurant reviews. I have also noticed that in the past six months or so the regular and serious reviewers have stopped posting. Instead an avalange of glowing 10/10 reviews has hit this website, by people who apparently only eat at one single restaurant, which then they choose to praise in one single review. Just like London-eating this website has started well but is going nowhere fast. More

The only one that comes to mind is Yam Cha. A Michelin starred Chinese restaurant with French influences. Only ten tables or so, so need to book way in advance. Apart from that I don't recommend eating Japanese food in Paris when used to London style eateries. It just doesn't compare. Stick to authentic French institutions when in Paris, I.e. Joel Robuchon, Voltaire, Cafe Flottes or L'ami Louis. More

Reply to “Food-gasms” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I'm so glad to hear. Don't expect much atmosphere Christopher J, but do expect delicious specials from the daily specials board. I just go through that one each time I eat there. Also if you are max 3 people, sit at the sushi bar and talk directly to the chef, he is very nice and will prepare you some dishes off menu. If you must have dessert, try the green tea créme brulee'. Reply to “Food-gasms” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I agree that we don't get them nearly often enough! I suppose when ones mouth is used to different flavours and ingredients all the time, there are very few surprises left.

Last time I went to Dinings, I had Wagyu beef nigiri. I know it sounds strange, but something about the tender meat, that was just seared, then brushed with a delicious truffle oil dressing and decorated with a small jellyfied piece of yuzu on the nigiris top, made it unusual and curageous. And it worked – my husband and I both agreed that we had experienced a culinary climax indeed. More

Reply to “Greenhouse or Rousillon? Birthday meal” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

The Greenhouse is a great choice, personally I find Roussillon a little ‘old’.
If you and your partner like fine wines, you should take him to Marcus Wareing @ the Berkeley Hotel for his B'day. I was taken there when it was still Petrus and the wine selection is to die for. If money is not an object order the tasting menu accompanied by different wines – it's spectaculary good, and the dining room is also very old fashioned-romantic. More

Reply to “Caviar – what is all the fuss about?” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

A person who knows caviar, knows not to order it in a restaurant. Of course it will be overpriced (duh), and it's a little silly that this is the way you try and impress ‘the girls’ (and even sillier that mediocre caviar impresses them). Furthermore what you were served could have been Iranian Beluga, as in Russia it is indeed illegal (not that it doesn't happen anyway, but it won't get into a London restaurant, it goes straight to the tables of caviar lovers). In my opinion, little star, you have never had the fortune of trying the real deal (which is Beluga Molossol) and I find it ironic that you include caviar in your last meal yet you do not seem to appreciate it's heavenly taste.
