Roast (Floral Hall, Stoney Street, London, SE1 1TL)

I went to roast expecting good quality meat and produce from Borough Market below and I wasn't disappointed. It's set at the back of the market in a hidden location, accessible by lift or stairs. We were seated next to the kitchen which was noisy with the natural sounds of cooking and, whilst probably not to everyone's satistfaction, I really like being up close and peronsal to my food! The black pudding was perfectly done with apple sauce, and I managed to convert a friend who never thought she'd eat it. Chargrilled lamb cutlets were on the money, as was my chicken main. I can't remember dessert as the cocktails were rather good and nothing but good memories of the place…

Salt Yard (54 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4NA)

A rival to Finos, Salt Yard on Godge Street has all the food quality at a slightly lower price. I very much enjoyed the restaurant setting downstairs, and each dish was presented perfectly with emphasis on quality. My first expereince of courgette flowers with honey and I'm a definite convert. Staff attentive and friendly, making it well-worth another visit. An extensive wine list is available, and that which we tried was superb. Highly recommended.

Arbutus (63-64 Frith Street, London, W1D 3JW)

Hugely excited by Arbutus. The waitress we had was fantastic, knowledgeable and not afraid to go and ask for more details. Food was a delight, including some treasures like pig's head terrine which I promise were actually very nice. Most amazing had to be the wines we had with the meal, working off recommendations. The dessert wine, a Barberra chilled red, was the best I've ever tasted, promted me to ask about off-sales and was simply the best accompaniment to a cheese board. My second favourite restaurant in London, closely following Finos.

Fino (33 Charlotte Street, London, W1T 1RR)

Editor's pick

Still my favourite restaurant in London. Great atmospher, friendly and attentive service and the odd appearance from the Hart's themselves. Food is so good I even once called up to speak to the chef about how he cooked his brocolli! Value for money is best on a deal (sometimes 50% off food), which allows you to splash out on excellent wine. They also have a good selection of dessert wine and brandy. Point to note is that not all mobiles work down here, so good for some, not for other. Cracking cocktails too – I recommended the Tanqueray 10 Martini (with a twist). Never failed to love it here.
