Alloro (19-20 Dover Street, London, London, W1S 4LU)

This was my first visit to Alloro and we were hugely impressed. The meet and greet was friendly & efficient. The restaurant is broken up into a number of different areas (rooms) and we had a very nice table in one of the quieter areas. The menu is really interesting, not long but very creative combinations and has some wonderful dishes. For starters I had the Italian omelette with prawns and my wife had the mozzarella and tomato. Both outstanding. We then both had pasta dishes – linguini & lobster and Ravioli & pesto – again out of the top drawer. We finished with some wonderful Brill simply pan fried. Great wine list and overall the restaurant was a very good experience. Would we go back? Definitely. Beware it is not cheap but like anything when it is really good quality you never really think about the price.

Mango Tree (46 Grosvenor Place, London, London, SW1X 7EQ)

This was my first time at the Mango Tree and I was very disappointed. Because it is Thai you are expecting it to be a quiet & gentle type of place. But it is very loud and noisy and lacks any real Thai atmosphere. The waiters are all wired up with headphones etc and it feels very much like a “mass market” experience. We had the Thai Platter which was disappointing – prawns in batter, rubbery fish cakes and chicken on skewers. This was very much the standard platter with nothing that was authentic or interesting about it. The main courses – Green Chick Curry, Phad Thai Noodles and Stir Fried Prawns with Basil were ok but again did not leave you with any “wow” factor. The acid test is always – would I go back? The answer is no, there are far nicer (and definitely quieter) Thai restaurants in London.

Barrica (62 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4NE)

. I ate in Barrica the other night and was very impressed. It is on Goodge Street beside a whole string of other restaurants. Firstly the staff were very extremely friendly and welcoming; the tapas on offer included the list of daily “specials” on the blackboard behind the counter and the regular menu. We chose from both and they were all excellent. They were very helpful & informative with the wine selection regions/areas in Spain etc. You can sit at tables down the back or at high stools & counters at the front. It is a very casual place but lovely food.

Hakkasan (8 Hanway Place, London, London, W1T 1HD)

I have eaten in Hakkasan over a number of years and if you like chinese food then it just does not get any better than this place. It is truely wonderful chinese food with Dim Sum to die for. I consider myself a chinese foodie and this is the best food I have ever eaten. Time and time again I have eaten there and I am never disappointed. If you go for the food then go at lunchtime where the Dim Sum menu is more extensive. At night the bar etc give it a unigue atmosphere. It is is at the end of a dark and narrow laneway and down dark stairs and then a whole new world opens up inside. The best.

Yming (35-36 Greek Street, London, W1D 5DL)

I have eaten in Yming a number of times at this stage and have been hugely impressed with the food, service and atmoshere of the place. It is very calm and relaxed for a Chinese restaurant. The menu is very good and combines some “specials/recommendations” with the main menu. The host is a very friendly guy who really looks after you. A great place with excellent food.
