The Don (The Courtyard, 20 St. Swithins Lane, London, EC4N 8AD) I was amazed upon visiting this place after hearing for so long about its reputation. Stuck down a frankly dangerous flight of stairs in a dingy underground cavern with no natural light we paid what seemed like a lot of money for a very average meal indeed. Being a French restaurant one might imagine that they would be able to cook steak well; embarrassingly in front of my business associate guests, this turned out not to be the case. I won't be paying a return visit nor recommending it.

Sweetings (39 Queen Victoria Street, London, EC4N 4SA) Sweetings is a immovable stalwart of the City scene and you get the impression that nothing but nothing would ever be allowed to stand in the way of the daily lunch service that has been running for decades. They do not accept bookings but after a short wait at the bar the efficient and unflappable staff manage to find seats in what usually looks like an impossible circumstance, often at communal tables sharing with other customers. Conditions can sometimes be beyond cramped but the freshest fish, served simply cooked and fast is so worth it. Prices are reasonable enough for the City and service is dedicated and from the old school end of the spectrum, presumably to match the decor which has not been updated forever but nevertheless suits the ambiance. School dinner style deserts such as spotted dick and custard round off the meal and coffee is not served to ensure rapid table turnaround. All this amounts to a delicious, speedily achieve d City lunch experience.

Cipriani (23-25 Davies Street, London, W1K 3DE) Cipriani did not disappoint. It has an incredible amount of ‘charisma’ and young or old, you won’t fail to be pulled in to the buzzy atmosphere. This is not to say you won’t be able to enjoy your meal however, just that there is plenty going on around you at all times in what amounts to one very slick operation. Cooking is high quality yet simple and unrepentantly stiffly priced , making a visit here a genuine treat.

Cafe Pacifico (5 Langley Street, London, WC2H 9JA) Café Pacifico in Covent Garden is the best place for tasty genuine Tex-Mex in London. At peak times it’s almost impossible to walk in off the street and get a table and they don’t take bookings, but most people are more than happy to while away the wait for a table with a highly alcoholic cocktail from the bar. Decor is themed and conditions can be cramped, but the fresh, high quality, reasonably priced food consisting of all the usual Tex-Mex suspects cooked extremely well and relatively fast, more than make up for this. The pico de gallo spicy tomato dip accompanying the complimentary nacho chips is very hot but delicious!

The Diner in Shoreditch is a place for cheap American eats and ‘Shoreditch life’ spotting. Food is dependably well cooked and the menu of burgers, dogs, tex-mex and breakfasts fairly extensive and includes a deliciously authentic cheesecake. Service can be haphazard and slow but what with the themed decor and the waiting staff being as eclectically dressed as the clientele, there are always some interesting sights to be seen whilst waiting.
