Incognico (117 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, London, WC2H 8AD) I cannot comment on the value for money as my husband paid however the maitre d'hote was fantastic and very attentive. the atmosphere was very jolly on arrival and thinned out by the end of our meal – alot of people eat here before the theatre. The crab salad was deliciously fresh and a very generous portion. Scallops were perfect. Both mains (liver and lamb) were well presented and I agree with the previous postings we were encouraged to order sides which we just about finished but then had no room for pudding. So if you ahve a sweet tooth don't order any sides.

This restaurant feels like a special occassion but dont just wait for one of those to come along, go and eat there soon. My first impressions of the dining room were excellent – I couldnt wait to sit down and enjoy it but we were early for our reservation so we were invited to take a seat in the bar downstairs. A rush of excitement as pre-dinner drinks at the bar means cocktail or champagne or…an unmanned bar where we sat for 10 minutes waiting for someone to appear and offer us a drink. Noone came so we went back upstairs and asked to be seated. The manager immediately offered us 2 glasses of champagne, these later turned up on the bill but all we had to do was point this out and it was removed straight away. Good service means correcting mistakes in a way that doesnt make you feel uncomfortable. They were very good at this on a busy Friday night. A dozen snails, half a dozen Oysters, more champagne and a bottle of quite the most delicious bordeaux. After our mains of Liver and Venison we were very happy. Warm bread was brought to the table several times and we were offered tap water. All in all I will be recommending this place but be prepared to push the boat out a little as it was more than £45 per head however that may have been down to the alcohol consumption.

XO (29 Belsize Lane, London, NW3 5AS) The lunch time men at XO is exceptionally good value. £11 for two courses I went with my sister last Friday There were half a dozen tables taken by ladies who lunch and within an hour we had ordered, eaten and paid so perfect for a working lunch. The tuna tartare is beautifully presented in a frozen bowl and palm leaf. My sisters dumplings were warm and tasted of the forest with a dark pungent mushroom filling that was light and comforting at the same time. The mains of pad thai – a great example of the Thai restaurant favourite, but the highlight for me was the duck, watermelon and cashew nut salad. It was a deliciously textured and full flavoured dish, that I will be trying again. Next time I wont bother with starters I'll go straight for the mains and try out the puds. I will be going back and I suggest you do to (for lunch at least)

Julie's (135 Portland Road, London, W11 4LW) This review is a dissapointment to write. I really like Julies and I often have a great evening snug in the bar with some fab wine and a warming pie or a steak. Its a great place to watch people go by and it can be so very romantic. So I relished the idea of a cosy dinner with my husband in the lull that is Carnival weekend. No need to make a reservation – there's noone around. So we decided to ‘splash out’ and eat in the restaurant. On arrival the meet and greet girl at the front desk was so informal I wondered what the hell she was doing there, it was like a disinterested shoe shop assistant. complete waste of time. We ordered some very nice wine which was served chilled and the waiting staff were excellent. It was quiet, as previously mentioned, so the dining roomwas quieter than usual. However we orded soem olives and crudities to share. Appalling! Almost £9 for a sad carrot that had been sliced quite some time ago, some bad tinned olives the olive ciabatta was ok but it really was a bit of an insult. Good news came with the mains. A really good lobster spaghetti lifted my spirits and my husband's lamb was terrific. We decided against coffee or pudding and asked for the bill. While we waited the front of house girl loitered by our table rearranging her hair and asking if we ‘wanted a cab or something?’ Unfortunately/fortunately we live a 5 minute walk away. I wish I had better things to say about the restaurant but I don't. Next time we go we'll be in the bar.

Fernandez & Wells (43 Lexington Street, London, W1F 9AL) wine is weighed at this tiny shopfront bar. standing room only so dont plan to spend the whole evening here we came for a glass of cava whilst waiting for our table at Andrew Edmunds across the road. The cava was great but you need sharp elbows to get anywhere near the counter. The staff seem very stressed but the smell of the tapas was very tempting so we eat morcilla (delicious black pudding) soem squid in ink and some olives. They should fill the rest of the building with tables and chairs and they wouold make a lot of soho drinkers very happy. I'd love to sit and enjoy a bottle of wine and a plate of splendid Jabugo ham but at £24 per plate I cannot justify eating it standing up whilst holding my glass because there is no room to manouvere.

Axis at One Aldwych (One Aldwych Hotel, 1 Aldwych, London, London, WC2B 4RH) On a hot friday night we descended into the cool and serene dining room. We had gone for the pre-theatre menu so the room was half full, my husband was the only man in the dining room. The service was impeccable. Smiling and attentive but not over bearing. The food was good and flavoursome, but it was the service that made it such a good meal. Tap water was brought tot he tabel without issue. The staff were so accomodating – I will go back.

Andrew Edmunds (46 Lexington Street, London, W1F 0LP) I took my husband for a quiet dinner a deux on a Friday night (23 April 2010) as we arrived at the restaurant we were greeted by friendlky but slightly frazzled staff who said our table woukld be ready in 15 minutes. We went across teh street to Wells and Fernandez and enjoyed some sherry and tapas there. We returned to the restaurant and were seated downstairs which was a bit tight for a 6 foot 1 man. However we carried on, knees knocking, The waiter was excellent and able to recommend some delicious wines and some of the highlights of the menus. We decided to share a starter – little did we know the portions are so generous. We struggled with our delicious mains (lamb shank and rolled pork) I couldnt even contemplate pud. Overall it was a lovely, quaintly romantic spot and reminded me of dining out as a student. Real hearty portions and lashings of fabulous red wine. The bill was a pleasant surprise – it's not often you say that in Soho!

E&O (14 Blenheim Crescent, London, W11 1NN) We went to E&O for a friends borthday on Saturday night (15th May 2010). As soon as we sat down at ten past 8, we were reminded that we ahd to give the table back at 10pm. We ordered a bottle of champagne and waited for the final member of the party to arrive. at twenty past eight the waiteer urged us to order our food as they had to turn the table. Food was very nice but its the atmosphere you pay for. Ive marked the service low not because of any mistakes or delays with the food but because they brought the bill without us asking for it. Better food at lower prices can be had at Nobu in Berkeley Square.

Thai Square Soho (27-28 St. Anne's Court, London, London, W1F 0BN) I was about to post a 9/10 for this restaurant and remembered the loos – such a let down. This place is always rammed but I've never been asked to leave to make way for more diners. You can enjoy some delicious food and plenty to drink and not get ripped off. They are more than happy to provide tap water without being snotty (always a bonus) and there are plenty of pubs nearby for a nightcap on the way abck to the tube.
