Taqueria (139-143 Westbourne Grove, London, W11 2RS) for 6 quid at lunchtime (12-4pm weekdays) you can have a bowl of warming broth (caldo tlapeno) with chicken, rice, avocado and chickpeas. Its filling and delicious and comes with two quesadillas on the side – perfect for re-fuelling I agree with the other reviewers – this is not greasy tex mex – this place serves authentic tasting mexican tacos

Decided to stop for a light refreshment whilst pounding the pavements of Soho Had a lovely bottle of Bohemia – was told that ‘due to lciensing laws’ I had to eat something if I wanted to have a beer – strange – sign outside definitely said this was a BAR. So I enjoyed three tacos of homemade chorizo and squash, good spicy and perfect accompaniment to the beer. Ivan the barman was great and set down a glass of tap water without even asking. It was early evening and starting to fill up – there was a good buzz – only opened 6 weeks. The bathrooms were clean and had nice products but warning – they are tiny – think airline loos. I'd like to come back and sample more of the menu.

The Panoramic (34th Floor, West Tower, Brook Street, Liverpool, L3 9PJ) Surprisingly small dining room with the most comfortable chairs Ive dined on for ages. The view is obviously the main focal point but you have to award this place a ten out of ten for the lighting, its so soft and flattering – this is the place to be proposed to/have a close up photo taken in Liverpool. Cracking cocktails to start. Great food from a short menu (approx 6 choices per course) Service was a bit hit and miss – lots of friendly staff – especially the lovely frenchman – with a heavy gallic accent – but there was a bit of confusion. We both ordered fish for mains but were given the wrong ones. We swapped our large bowls around – small point – but at this level (excuse the pun) of dining – and only two diners you expect them to get it right. Toilets (apologies) toilet – yes, just one for the ladies…very curious – it was clean but a bit untidy and hadn't been checked for a while. The lush decor of the dining room did not carry over into the loos and there were some really bizarre pictures that just didnt go with the rest of the sumptuous, luxurious feel of the place. one starter, two mains, one pud, two cocktails and bottle of wine = £130 This is a great place for a special occassion

London Carriage Works (Hope Street Hotel, 40 Hope Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, L1 9DA) My husband and I had lunch here on Saturday afternoon. It was fairly quiet in the dining room but the kitchen was clearly on top form. The set lunch here is really good value. Usually a set lunch means smaller portions of the a la carte menu for a pro-rata price, not here. Grilled Hallomi, tomatoes and tapenade – a really lovely warm slad to start proceddings. Loin of pork was delightful – handsome portions of meat and veg – so no sides required. The smoked haddock risotto from the a la carte was rich, comforting and cuddly – like a good risotto should. We ordered a bottle of pink fizz and when the waiter didnt return after 10 minutes we began to worry. He emerged from the bar apologising profusely – he had gone to the cellar convinced there was more pink fizz when he finished his shift yesterday. ‘Must be a few hens staying in the hotel’ he said 'we've no rose left'. He promptly produced a cold bottle of the brut and all was forgotten. Panacotta to finish a really good dining experience and so pleased to see local staff being employeed. Toilets were clean and well kept. Staff were friendly and helpful. Bill was very good. £80 including tip for champagne lunch for two, or perhaps I've been in London too long?

Uli (16 All Saints Road, London, W11 1HH) Proper neighbourhood restaurant. Same owner for ever. Same chef for years. Seems like most of the diners have been coming here for aeons too. The owner, lovely Michael, seemed to know everyone in the dining room and was utterly charming to us. He recommended we return when the weather is better and dine in the cute little garden at the rear. We ate steamed spicy dumplings and fried turnip cakes to start (lovely delicate flavours) We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Macon villages Then Squid in sweet chilli sauce – a little too sweet for me Seafood platter – a lovely dish of stirfried fish and seafood Spicy green beans – these were a hit steamed rice – did what it said on the tin including service all in for £80 and Michael invited us to another glass of wine after the meal and had a little chat This is local restaurant service at its best.

Hereford Road (3 Hereford Road, London, W2 4AB) I have just enjoyed the Hereford Road ‘express lunch’. One course with a glass of wine to match (both change daily) bread and butter and a coffee for £9.50. Today it was cockles in leeks, thyme and cider – utterly delicious. Clearly none of the ingredients were very expensive but they were really well presented adn the wine was the perfect match to the sweetness of the cockles. Ive read severeal reviews complaining about the service – it was fine. Not too intrusive, smiley and welcoming. This is good quality food, linen napkin, decent wine – all for under a tenner (with service its actually £10.69) AND you are ina nd out of the restaurant within the hour. I will be back, again and again

Salt Yard (54 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4NA) The best tortilla I've eaten in London. You could easily spend, spend, spend here but if you order carefully you can eat really well without giving the bank manager a heart attack The wine list looked amazing but we had cava cocktails to start and then enjoyed some spanish beer. pimientos de padron, courgette flowers, cod cheeks, jerusalem artichoke puree with porcini mushrooms was so flavoursome I almost had a vegetarian conversion moment – ALMOST!

Fez Mangal (104 Ladbroke Grove, London, W11 1PY) The queue out the door for takeaway speaks for itself this W10 eatery serves up simple grilled meats/fish or veg served with some cracking chilli sauce and moreish hot bread there is also cool yoghurty sauce but you want to add heat on a cold winters evening then there's the rice and salad on the side – yum! We nearly always go here for an early supper with the kids. Its BYO so the off licence next door is more than happy to sell you beer or wine And it's just a stone's throw from the tube. What's not to like?

Inn the Park (St James's Park, London, SW1A 2BJ) Dos and donts Do come here on a sunny day Do get good service from very smiley waiters Do use the nice and clean loos Don't drive here you will have to park in Victoria practically Don't come here if you are in a hurry – food takes forever to come Don't expect value for money The food was ok – nothing to get excited about, service was good but it had to be – food took so long it was embarrasing – I wouldnt recommend this place for an evening out (we had come for my mother's birthday) they were holding a large office party at the same time – they should have closed it for the office event as they couldnt cope with the party and the private diners. Great location, lovely building – so much potential but just let down by the food – which is the whole reason you visit a restaurant, right?

I dined here with some friends on a Monday night. There was a Thai puppet show taking place which addded a lot to the atmosphere. Highpoints are the sparkling loos – high praise indeed! and smiling service. Low points – the food was ok, but not on a par with the pricing.

Pizza East (310 Portobello Road, London, London, W10 5TA) The new pizzeria on Portobello Road is causing a stir. It's been packed out every day since opening. The only slow service (according to the waiter) is breakfast (served from 8am) We were told that garlic bread was ‘instantaneous’ however it took a while to arrive and when it did – it was burnt. Once this was pointed out to the waiter it was replaced in an instant and removed from the bill. Hence the marking of 9/10 for service. The pizzas were good – not outstanding. The lasagne was really good and the roasted meats and fish which were displayed openly infront of teh wood fire oven looked incredible. My husbands pork belly pizza had more pork on it than a city farm – he was positively oinking about it. I will be back.

Maggie Jones's (6 Old Court Place, London, London, W8 4PL) Go for the lunch menu Thats value for money Escape the hoards of shoppers on Ken High Street and duck into this nook and cranny of a place. Perfect for spies and/or affairs. The service is fab and accomodating but there's no denying the touch of yesteryear about this place. It feels like a coaching inn place my parents used to take us to for a ‘fancy meal out’ Lunch menu offers soup and a salad for £10. French onion soup was warming and tasty and highly calorific with the melted cheese toastie on top. The chicken and avocado salad scrimped on neither ingredient. Seemed to be lots of tourists on the day we visited or maybe just ex-pat europeans who seem to have taken over most of W8/W11

Galicia (323 Portobello Road, London, W10 5SY) I love Galicia. The waiters are old school, its a bit of a step back in time and you can sit at the bar drinking sherry and eating tapas and pretend you are in Spain. There are no foams or reductions served here just good honest grub in man sized rations. They are always welcoming (in their own peculiar way). Its the neighbourhood local and it's guarunteed to always stay that way – no chance of expanding this tiny place

Proud Cabaret City (1 Mark Lane, London, London, EC3R 7AA) we had a fantastic night out on saturday. the show was great and all the punters had made the effort and dressed up to the nines. I think we may have been the last to leave at 2am, as a result the bill did stack up somewhat, possibly due to the vast quantities of wine we ordered. At £49 per head for a three course meal and a show I think its great value. The food was of a very good standard. The pork belly was divine and the meat from the lamb shank fell apart. Choclate fondant and cheese plate were the best of the puds we tried. The service was wonderfully attentive and charming. All the staff seemed very chirpy and looked like they were enjoying themselves – always nice! I will be back.
