Salt Yard (54 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4NA) The best tortilla I've eaten in London. You could easily spend, spend, spend here but if you order carefully you can eat really well without giving the bank manager a heart attack The wine list looked amazing but we had cava cocktails to start and then enjoyed some spanish beer. pimientos de padron, courgette flowers, cod cheeks, jerusalem artichoke puree with porcini mushrooms was so flavoursome I almost had a vegetarian conversion moment – ALMOST!

Fez Mangal (104 Ladbroke Grove, London, W11 1PY) The queue out the door for takeaway speaks for itself this W10 eatery serves up simple grilled meats/fish or veg served with some cracking chilli sauce and moreish hot bread there is also cool yoghurty sauce but you want to add heat on a cold winters evening then there's the rice and salad on the side – yum! We nearly always go here for an early supper with the kids. Its BYO so the off licence next door is more than happy to sell you beer or wine And it's just a stone's throw from the tube. What's not to like?

Inn the Park (St James's Park, London, SW1A 2BJ) Dos and donts Do come here on a sunny day Do get good service from very smiley waiters Do use the nice and clean loos Don't drive here you will have to park in Victoria practically Don't come here if you are in a hurry – food takes forever to come Don't expect value for money The food was ok – nothing to get excited about, service was good but it had to be – food took so long it was embarrasing – I wouldnt recommend this place for an evening out (we had come for my mother's birthday) they were holding a large office party at the same time – they should have closed it for the office event as they couldnt cope with the party and the private diners. Great location, lovely building – so much potential but just let down by the food – which is the whole reason you visit a restaurant, right?

I dined here with some friends on a Monday night. There was a Thai puppet show taking place which addded a lot to the atmosphere. Highpoints are the sparkling loos – high praise indeed! and smiling service. Low points – the food was ok, but not on a par with the pricing.

Pizza East (310 Portobello Road, London, W10 5TA) The new pizzeria on Portobello Road is causing a stir. It's been packed out every day since opening. The only slow service (according to the waiter) is breakfast (served from 8am) We were told that garlic bread was ‘instantaneous’ however it took a while to arrive and when it did – it was burnt. Once this was pointed out to the waiter it was replaced in an instant and removed from the bill. Hence the marking of 9/10 for service. The pizzas were good – not outstanding. The lasagne was really good and the roasted meats and fish which were displayed openly infront of teh wood fire oven looked incredible. My husbands pork belly pizza had more pork on it than a city farm – he was positively oinking about it. I will be back.

Maggie Jones's (6 Old Court Place, London, W8 4PL) Go for the lunch menu Thats value for money Escape the hoards of shoppers on Ken High Street and duck into this nook and cranny of a place. Perfect for spies and/or affairs. The service is fab and accomodating but there's no denying the touch of yesteryear about this place. It feels like a coaching inn place my parents used to take us to for a ‘fancy meal out’ Lunch menu offers soup and a salad for £10. French onion soup was warming and tasty and highly calorific with the melted cheese toastie on top. The chicken and avocado salad scrimped on neither ingredient. Seemed to be lots of tourists on the day we visited or maybe just ex-pat europeans who seem to have taken over most of W8/W11

Galicia (323 Portobello Road, London, W10 5SY) I love Galicia. The waiters are old school, its a bit of a step back in time and you can sit at the bar drinking sherry and eating tapas and pretend you are in Spain. There are no foams or reductions served here just good honest grub in man sized rations. They are always welcoming (in their own peculiar way). Its the neighbourhood local and it's guarunteed to always stay that way – no chance of expanding this tiny place

Proud Cabaret (1 Mark Lane, London, EC3R 7AA) we had a fantastic night out on saturday. the show was great and all the punters had made the effort and dressed up to the nines. I think we may have been the last to leave at 2am, as a result the bill did stack up somewhat, possibly due to the vast quantities of wine we ordered. At £49 per head for a three course meal and a show I think its great value. The food was of a very good standard. The pork belly was divine and the meat from the lamb shank fell apart. Choclate fondant and cheese plate were the best of the puds we tried. The service was wonderfully attentive and charming. All the staff seemed very chirpy and looked like they were enjoying themselves – always nice! I will be back.

Incognico (117 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8AD) I cannot comment on the value for money as my husband paid however the maitre d'hote was fantastic and very attentive. the atmosphere was very jolly on arrival and thinned out by the end of our meal – alot of people eat here before the theatre. The crab salad was deliciously fresh and a very generous portion. Scallops were perfect. Both mains (liver and lamb) were well presented and I agree with the previous postings we were encouraged to order sides which we just about finished but then had no room for pudding. So if you ahve a sweet tooth don't order any sides.

This restaurant feels like a special occassion but dont just wait for one of those to come along, go and eat there soon. My first impressions of the dining room were excellent – I couldnt wait to sit down and enjoy it but we were early for our reservation so we were invited to take a seat in the bar downstairs. A rush of excitement as pre-dinner drinks at the bar means cocktail or champagne or…an unmanned bar where we sat for 10 minutes waiting for someone to appear and offer us a drink. Noone came so we went back upstairs and asked to be seated. The manager immediately offered us 2 glasses of champagne, these later turned up on the bill but all we had to do was point this out and it was removed straight away. Good service means correcting mistakes in a way that doesnt make you feel uncomfortable. They were very good at this on a busy Friday night. A dozen snails, half a dozen Oysters, more champagne and a bottle of quite the most delicious bordeaux. After our mains of Liver and Venison we were very happy. Warm bread was brought to the table several times and we were offered tap water. All in all I will be recommending this place but be prepared to push the boat out a little as it was more than £45 per head however that may have been down to the alcohol consumption.

XO (29 Belsize Lane, London, NW3 5AS) The lunch time men at XO is exceptionally good value. £11 for two courses I went with my sister last Friday There were half a dozen tables taken by ladies who lunch and within an hour we had ordered, eaten and paid so perfect for a working lunch. The tuna tartare is beautifully presented in a frozen bowl and palm leaf. My sisters dumplings were warm and tasted of the forest with a dark pungent mushroom filling that was light and comforting at the same time. The mains of pad thai – a great example of the Thai restaurant favourite, but the highlight for me was the duck, watermelon and cashew nut salad. It was a deliciously textured and full flavoured dish, that I will be trying again. Next time I wont bother with starters I'll go straight for the mains and try out the puds. I will be going back and I suggest you do to (for lunch at least)

Julie's (135 Portland Road, London, W11 4LW) This review is a dissapointment to write. I really like Julies and I often have a great evening snug in the bar with some fab wine and a warming pie or a steak. Its a great place to watch people go by and it can be so very romantic. So I relished the idea of a cosy dinner with my husband in the lull that is Carnival weekend. No need to make a reservation – there's noone around. So we decided to ‘splash out’ and eat in the restaurant. On arrival the meet and greet girl at the front desk was so informal I wondered what the hell she was doing there, it was like a disinterested shoe shop assistant. complete waste of time. We ordered some very nice wine which was served chilled and the waiting staff were excellent. It was quiet, as previously mentioned, so the dining roomwas quieter than usual. However we orded soem olives and crudities to share. Appalling! Almost £9 for a sad carrot that had been sliced quite some time ago, some bad tinned olives the olive ciabatta was ok but it really was a bit of an insult. Good news came with the mains. A really good lobster spaghetti lifted my spirits and my husband's lamb was terrific. We decided against coffee or pudding and asked for the bill. While we waited the front of house girl loitered by our table rearranging her hair and asking if we ‘wanted a cab or something?’ Unfortunately/fortunately we live a 5 minute walk away. I wish I had better things to say about the restaurant but I don't. Next time we go we'll be in the bar.

Fernandez & Wells (43 Lexington Street, London, W1F 9AL) wine is weighed at this tiny shopfront bar. standing room only so dont plan to spend the whole evening here we came for a glass of cava whilst waiting for our table at Andrew Edmunds across the road. The cava was great but you need sharp elbows to get anywhere near the counter. The staff seem very stressed but the smell of the tapas was very tempting so we eat morcilla (delicious black pudding) soem squid in ink and some olives. They should fill the rest of the building with tables and chairs and they wouold make a lot of soho drinkers very happy. I'd love to sit and enjoy a bottle of wine and a plate of splendid Jabugo ham but at £24 per plate I cannot justify eating it standing up whilst holding my glass because there is no room to manouvere.

Axis at One Aldwych (One Aldwych Hotel, 1 Aldwych, London, WC2B 4RH) On a hot friday night we descended into the cool and serene dining room. We had gone for the pre-theatre menu so the room was half full, my husband was the only man in the dining room. The service was impeccable. Smiling and attentive but not over bearing. The food was good and flavoursome, but it was the service that made it such a good meal. Tap water was brought tot he tabel without issue. The staff were so accomodating – I will go back.
