Strada Panton Street (Panton House, 39 Panton Street, London, London, SW1Y 4EA)

As this is fast becoming my West End pre-theatre restaurant of choice (at least three visits in the past few months) I thought it was high time it was given a bit of recognition. It may not be the fanciest place I've ever eaten at, but for a good quality, good value two course meal served and enjoyed within an hour or so, it is very hard to beat. My dining and theatre companions have varied on each occasion and no-one has left the table disappointed. Pasta dishes are the standout choice, but pizza and regular main dishes are also highly commended. Staff have always been friendly and accommodating, and very aware that at certain times of the day, customers time is at a premium but manage to achieve the fine balance between unhurried and speedy service. Definitely worth signing up to receive their regular offers for an even better value meal!

Cinnamon Kitchen (9 Devonshire Square, London, London, EC2M 4WY)

My second visit to CK but this time, it was not warm enough to sit out on the terrace, which was a shame as I cannot say that I am particularly blown away by the room itself. Yes it is big, grand and elegant, but the regimented table layout means that you are aligned and very close to the neighbouring tables (a particular bug bear of mine) and many diners do tend to take a somewhat haphazard route through the room, meaning that many tables feel like you are sitting in a throughfare to the “facilities”. The noise from their neightbouring bar was also much more noticeable this time and is somewhat at odds with the elegance of the restaurant.

That said, the food is nigh on fautless. A trip to India some years ago has made me somewhat picky when it comes to Indian food, but the menu at CK is simply gorgeous. My starter of venison kebabs created a lovely slow burn on the palate as all the flavours developed whilst my friend's Welsh lamb version had so many layers of flavour it was almost beyond belief. Service was relaxed, unhurried and knowledgable – I couldn't decide between the barramundi or king prawns for main course and was gently swayed to the former by the waiter. A fabulous choice as the fish and seafood curry that arrived was full of flavour and beautifully presented. Portion sizes are pretty good – we didn't have room for dessert.

It is not the cheapest of places but for authentic Indian taste and flavour with a modern twist, it is highly recommended. Just that personally, I'll be saving my next visit for when the conditions allow al fresco eating!

Jamie's Italian Canary Wharf (Unit 17, 2 Churchill Place, London, E14 5RB)

Feeling completely drained after being lucky enough to have had tickets for the Nadal/Murray battle at the O2, we could not face the endless queues that constitute dining at the arena after an event, and instead jumped the tube one stop to Canary Wharf. After a bit of a hunt (don't follow the subterranean signs – stick to street level and head towards Waitrose instead!) we eventually discovered Jamie's. Although the restaurant was pretty packed we were offered a table on the condition that we were there just over an hour – this suited us so we were seated immediately. Our waitress was attentive but not overly hurried even given our limited table time. We shared a starter of bruschetta topped with crab, chili and lemon and although it looked like some sort of shop bought sandwich spread, tastewise it could not have been further from such a comparison. The initial fresh crab taste morphed into a slow warm burn as the chili kicked in – absolutely on the spot to take away the chill of the day. For mains we both had the scallop and squid ink angel hair pasta, which although a bit “gloopy” in parts was utterly delicious. My friend, who is a keen cook and uses Jamie's recipies a lot, was finally convinced of his suggestion of leaving some of the cooking juices in the serving bowl – it did keep the somewhat generous helping warm and moist until the last mouthful. Whilst I would not aim to go here again for a “proper” night out, for a relatively quick meal at the end of shopping on the Wharf, or indeed, to avoid the tedious queues at the restaurants within the O2 either before or after an event, this really will stay on my list and be recommended to others.

Arbutus (63-64 Frith Street, London, London, W1D 3JW)

We were a party of 6 for Saturday dinner, booked ages ago but still heavily reminded that our reservation was from 8 until 10pm when they called on the eve to confirm the booking. We actually arrrived somewhat earlier hoping to get a drink at the bar beforehand but only to be greeted somewhat frostily (definitely in keeping with the outside climate) by the receptionist (her tone and manner were such that “greeter” would be way beyond the trade description act) with “bar's fully booked” and then a somewhat reluctant, “but your table's ready so you can have drinks there if you want”. Our coats were then collected somewhat begrudgingly by another sour faced helpmate and we were led into the somewhat narrow room where our table did indeed wait.

Fortunately the evening picked up no end from this low point. Our waiter was an absolute joy – efficient but not hurried, professional but very friendly. The food was nigh on faultless, including the theatre that is their take on bouillbaisse. One of our party is a French native and although she had never seen a DIY version of the dish served in a restaurant before she did agree that it was quite a spectacle although she did get somewhat sniffy about the inclusion of a lone potato – clearly not de rigueur as an ingredient back in France. The absolute triumph however has to be the tarte tartin – my bettter half is trying to perfect his homemade version and now has perfection to aim for, such was the quality of the dish before us. A small quibble – neither of us fancied the creme fraiche that accompanied the dish and asked if we could have ice cream – not a problem, we were assured. The tiny scoop of said ice cream looked somewhat lonely alongside the mound of pudding (a dish for two, but could have easily served four) so perhaps a refusal of our request may have been a kinder option.

We were finally asked to vacate our table at 10:30 which was fine as we had by then just finished coffee. It would have been interesting to see what they… More

Galvin Café a Vin (35 Spital Square, London, London, E1 6DY)

Word of warning – don't go here if you want to keep your conversation private. It is not the biggest space in the world and as such, the tables are somewhat crammed together – fine for parties of four, not for parties of two. We dined on a Tuesday evening and fortunately it was not too busy so the adjoining table was empy, otherwise it would have been akin to dining with strangers. The tables are tiny too so require a degree of dexterity to juggle, wine and water glasses, bottles, bread basket…not to mention plates of food!

That said, the food and service were truly excellent and made for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. Menu is not extensive, but what they do, they do very well. Portion sizes are generous, although the irresistable french bread and creamy butter probably added to our inability to make it to dessert. Of our starters, the salt cod, poached egg and hollandaise arguably won a close contest against the chestnut pasta with duck ragu. For mains my friend went for the daily special of seared squid with chili on a bed of coco beans – whilst it didn't look that appettising on the eye, it certainly worked well from a taste perspective. My fillet of plaice was perfectly cooked although the accompanying vegetables were a tad overdone for my taste. Two courses, glass of white wine each to start, nice bottle of red with the meal and coffee brought the bill in at £110 including the now obligatory 12.5% service. No issue in paying that here as the waiting staff are worth every penny.

Restaurant Critic

Daphne's (112 Draycott Avenue, London, London, SW3 3AE)

Aside from the cardinal sin of cramming far too many diners in over a pre-Christmas lunch service (one side of our table effectively “shared” with a party of 5 shoehorned onto a table designed for 4, whereas the other side had us sitting in the corridor), this was an otherwise wonderful experience. The food has got to be some of the best I have tasted in recent months and I am still torn between which was the better dish – my companion's rabbit ravioli or my parpadelle of wild boar. Either way, both warrant a return in the not too distant future.

Service, aside from the fact that they did not think to move us to a better table for dessert and coffee (tables were available by this time) was otherwise exemplary. I had to mark them down on the ratings just for this apparent “oversight”. We will take away the advice on which tables to ask for on our next visit.

Northbank (1 Paul's Walk, London, London, EC4V 3QH)

Despite lunching alongside two very large parties during the festive season, we were very pleasantly surprised by the level and attentiveness of service. The food was excellent (I echo a previous review about the shoulder of beef – comfort food at its best!) although we could have used a wee bit of prompting from the staff regarding extra dishes with our main courses; both would have been even better with a vegetable dish or two. The only gripe I have is the usage of paper tablecloths (yuk!) which given the menu and the ambience of the restaurant, did not really sit that well at all. That will not prevent me from a return visit, nor from highly recommending it to others.

Lutyens (85 Fleet Street, London, London, EC4Y 1AE)

Have been to Luytens twice in recent weeks, once for lunch, once for dinner. My advice would be, if you want to have the entire freedom of the menu, opt for lunch! Although the maitre'd was very charming and amusing with the anouncements of what was not available, it did become a little bit more of a joke when the items no longer available went as far as the rotisserie chicken and even the spinach! That said, it is a lovely room with excellent service. Is on the list for a return, but only during daylight hours…

Green's Restaurant & Oyster Bar (14 Cornhill, London, London, EC3V 3ND)

A hastily arranged lunch in the pre-Christmas period, so we could only get a table in the “overflow” room and whilst it is a little stark, we did not suffer from unattentive service. Personally I struggled with the starters, not being much of an oyster fan, and the pumpkin and cheese terrine I settled on, whilst beautifully presented was not particularly exciting to taste. My companion fared better – an unappetising looking fishcake turned out to be jam packed with salmon and very tasty, although somewhat lacking with the accompanying sauce. For mains, their smoked haddock Parker Bowles really is the height of comfort eating – a good slab of tasty haddock, smooth and creamy chive mash and a perfectly poached egg – absolutely bliss. Although I had eyes for the chocolate fondant, unfortunately I did not have the appetite for it. Note to self, return to Green's but skip the starters. Staff were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable and the bar is definitely on the list of “must try”.

Mint Leaf Lounge (12 Angel Court, London, EC2R 7HB)

Didn't even get to second base! I have never encountered such rudeness when trying to make a reservation. After providing my telephone number I was asked for my email address – somewhat excessive I thought, given that this was only in respect of a lunch booking for three people. When I enquired why it was needed, I was told that I had provided an incorrect telephone number and as such, an email was required to confirm the booking. I repeated the telephone number and it turned out that the receptionist had missed off a digit – no apology was forthcoming. I was then asked for my name; I provided my surname. I was then asked for my first name as "it was needed for the booking" – why?? I replied "Ms" which I then had to spell. As the call took place in such bad grace, I simply pulled it as if this is the impression they want to give to the outside, what on earth can it be like when you get there…??

Get real Mint Leaf – there is a recession coming. The paying public is doing you a favour by giving you business, not the other way around…
