Roka (37 Charlotte Street, London, London, W1T 1RR)

Editor's pick

When I came into Roka I couldn't believe how good I felt. And well, the warmth of the Robata Grill on any cold, rainy day, could make you feel at home instantly. Or even better than home. Your turn around to look at the street from the inside, as the restaurant is completely surrounded by glass and you feel you will never want to leave. But you've got a limited sitting time, so you need to speed up! Maybe decide what you will be ordering before you arrive so you can win those extra minutes to slowly enjoy the food. Service is very fast anyway.

It was my first contemporary japanese restaurant and I was very much impressed with everything from decoration, flavor, presentation, to the robata grill itself and watching the chefs cook around it. It´s definitely a great show and a different experience to any other restaurant.

We chose one of the tasting menus and it was exceptional. You can never go wrong here. The perfectly assembled and presented sushi rolls, the beautiful sashimi sitting on the crushed ice, the tasty robata dishes: everything is wonderful.
The deserts are a great treat as well.

I can´t wait for my second time around. And I will definitely sit around the grill next time to watch everything in more detail.

Casa Brindisa (7-9 Exhibition Road, London, SW7 2HE)

I have never actually been to Spain. But through Casa Brindisa a part of me gets to travel there.

You can identify all the Spanish flavors in their classic tapas: tortillas, croquettes, prawns in garlic, charcuterie, papas bravas and so on. They recreate the real thing. How do I know it is the real thing? Because the restaurant is full of Spanish costumers.

If you do not book a table before showing up, you might have to wait at the bar.

Their wine selection is quite good as well. And they have a store where you can buy a variety of spanish imported products.

The restaurant is well priced. We spend around 60 pounds every time we go there, for 2 people. But you could go up to 100 pounds for 2 people if you get fancy with the pata negra ham, or a whole bottle of wine (they have a good selection of wines by the glass)

Casa Brindisa is not pretentious, it is simple and delicious. The staff is kind, service is fast.

I would go back as often as I could. Do not miss out on it!

Fino (33 Charlotte Street, London, London, W1T 1RR)

I thought that by taking my partner on his birthday to Fino I was making a right and safe choice.
After reading reviews, looking through the gallery and menu on their webpage, having heard about the success of Barrafina, I thought I could not go wrong.

Well, I did go wrong.

The decoration is not great. Maybe it was very trendy about 10 years ago, but it needs some updating. It looks nothing like the pictures on their website.
The service in general is a bit careless. They seem quite dozed off.

The food is very good. Flavors are great. We ordered the charcuterie platter which I wasn´t particularly pleased with, but the ham and potatoes croquettes were great, the artichokes as well. The prawns are very enjoyable, so were the scallops. And the desserts, in this case crema catalana and a selection of ice creams are quite good, but not surprising either.

If you do not care about the atmosphere and the service, and you are just looking for a great spanish meal, then this is the place.
If you want to be surprised with flavors, and well treated, then maybe try Casa Brindisa. Another lovely spanish restaurant with good service and similar food standards.

Sushi Hiroba (50-54 Kingsway, London, WC2B 6EP)

Sometimes I decide to walk around and see where I end up. And that night I ended up at Sushi Hiroba.

You sit down on a concept similar to Yo Sushi. But oh no, it is nothing like Yo Sushi. I think I am a bit embarrassed to compare something to Yo Sushi on a review, but now you can picture the plates going around.

To start off, the ginger is quite nice. A very important point.

You can chose small plates with 2 or 3 pieces of tempura, sushi rolls, crab clams, niguiri, sashimi, desserts, edamame, etc. And you can also order from the menu a lot more.

You can pick as many and as different combinations as you like, but I would strongly recommend to try new things. They come in tiny small plates anyway. So why not, try that eel you´ve never dared to.

I´ve also noticed that there are some great big plates for larger tables, but since I always sit by the counter, I could not give my opinion about it, other than saying that they look pretty tempting.

You can sit in front of the plates that go around, or on larger tables on the side. Either option is great.

The staff if lovely and helpful. Sometimes they´ll even feel very motivated and put some nice music on.

This will certainly not be a very romantic fancy dinner, (or maybe it will, you let me know) but you will enjoy to experience these flavors. You can go for a quick lunch or dinner.
