Galvin at Windows (London Hilton, 22 Park Lane, London, London, W1K 1BE)

I had never been out for Valentines Day before, so I was a little dubious about spending an evening surrounded by other couples. People always say that first impressions mean a lot and Galvin most definitely made a good one. We were warmly greeted as we entered and were quickly shown to our table and of course it is hard not love the breath taking the views.

We were told that we would have one waiter assigned to us for the evening and he was introduced to us, however this was clearly not the case as we were served by a variety of people and I quickly forgot who had been assigned to us in the first place. Though this was not as irritating as it may sound, as all the waiting staff were friendly and polite, but not in a formal and stiff way.

All of the food was absolutely sensational and I honestly cannot think of any way to fault it. We had a ham hock with carrot foam Amuse Bouche; I was blown away by how they had managed to capture such a strong carrot flavour in the foam. I then had goat’s cheese curd, with baby vegetables, which was beautifully presented like a vegetable patch and almost looked too good to eat.

The Foie Gras was surprisingly unrich, which meant that I was able to eat a lot more than I normally would, which as far as I am concerned is never a bad thing. The main was a small piece of fillet steak, served on beef cheek, which left me feeling utterly spoilt and just to top it off there was the most delicious reduction and perfect creamed potato. This was all accompanied by a wonderful bottle of Alamos, an Argentinean, Cabernet Sauvignon.

In between courses I paid a visit to the loos, which turned out to be the only disappointment of the evening, as there was toilet roll all over the floor and with only two loos in there one hoped that one of them would be nice and clean, but this was not the case. As I returned to the table the dessert arrived, which was a heart shaped chocolate mousse covered in gold leaf and I thought that maybe they had taken Valentine’s… More

Mews of Mayfair (10-11 Lancashire Court, London, W1S 1EY)

I was drawn to Mews of Mayfair by the menu that sounded so promising; it was exactly what I was looking for after a frantic and stressful week. The restaurant is tucked away in a warren of Mews buzzing with crowded restaurants and bars. As I entered the restaurant I noticed how pleasing the decor was, all white and clean looking, with delicate little butterflies painted on the walls.

We ordered the house red, which tasted like it was far cheaper that the £20 that we were paying for it, however the bread rolls that they brought out were deliciously fresh. I ordered the ham hock and duck terrine as a starter.

After returning from the ornate bathroom, I noticed that the room was suddenly much darker, but could just about make out my starter was waiting for me on the table. Although the ham hock and duck terrine was good and accompanied by a delicious pear and apple chutney, it was hard to get the full enjoyment out of it, with staff beginning to rush around frantically, due to the fact that it was only the floor of the restaurant that was suffering from a power cut.

As a main I had ordered burger with Foie Gras, which arrived surprisingly quickly considering all the other tables had been told that there was a problem with their food and the waiting staff were not sure when it would be arriving.

The actual burger itself, tasted as a good home made burger should, but the first thing that I had noticed when it had arrived, was the bun. The bun looked exactly like the cheap kind that you would buy, when you suddenly realised that the one thing that had forgotten for the BBQ were the buns and quickly ran to the corner shop and bought the ones that had probably been sitting on the shelf for a couple of months. The Foie Gras had obviously been cooked in the same pan as the burger and disappointingly this over powered any taste that it might have previously possessed. The chips were the only thing that saved the meal from being a complete disaster, they were wonderfully crisp on… More
