Fish! (Cathedral Street, London, SE1 9AL)

Expensive fish with little to get excited about.

Wapping Food (Wapping Hydraulic Power Station, Wapping Wall, London, E1W 3SG)

The Wapping Projecy is a wonderful space.

Excellent food served in an a unique environment – with the chance to wander off to the cavernous galleries (empty or full).

A fine choice of rose wine.

A rare chance to eat fine food and look at machinery … at half the price of the West End.

Eccentric owner.

Thai Square Minories (136 Minories, London, EC3N 1NT)

Tired service and lack of atmosphere rendered the experience tedious.

Food fine.

Busaba Eathai Wardour Street (106-110 Wardour Street, London, W1F 0TR)

Excellent fodder … an up market Wagamama with a more original feel.

Often queues … tells a story.

Thai Square Putney (2-4 Lower Richmond Road, London, SW15 1LB)

Busy Saturday night so very impressive service.

Drinks flowed constantly and food appeared in good time due to fleet of waiting staff.

Aromatic duck – solid – though got the feeling it had been sitting a while.

Ostrich + chillis on rice – spot on.

Buzzy atmosphere.

Restaurant Critic

Soseki (20 Bury Street, London, EC3A 5AX)

A very poor experience given the hype.

Service was desperately slow – in fact we gave up before the end of the meal.

Some of the soups were very pleasing – sushi/sashimi was good – but left feeling that 50% of the staff had been laid off in order to allow 50% off the food prices.

At full price this would have been terrible – okay at 50% off.

The Cinnamon Club (The Old Westminster Library, 30-32 Great Smith Street, London, SW1P 3BU)

A wonderful feast of excellent food added to by excellent service.

Expensive but worth it for a memorable experience.

The library setting giving a pleasing Westminster feel.

Cinnamon Kitchen (9 Devonshire Square, London, EC2M 4WY)

Whilst the Cinammon Kitchen aspires to the qualities of the Cinammon Club it falls far short.

The lamb was beautifully done, the desert well appointed, but you were left feeling the object was to milk as much money from clients as possible via the overpriced (soft) drinks and extras.

Service was poor on the whole – very slow.

Half way there – but not much scope for second chances at £65 a head with no beer/wine.

Wagamama Old Broad Street (22 Old Broad Street, London, EC2N 1HQ)

Quality beginning to vary as Wagamama becomes a tired experience.

The days of feeling it was a value option for good fusion food are gone.

A quick snack of Edamame beans and Chicken Chilli Men goes down well enough but one in ten the quality is poor so the experience becomes pointless.

“Starters” are now expensive.

“Mains” are solid.

Vivat Bacchus (4 Hays Lane, London, SE1 2HB)

A beautiful setting for an indoor picnic.

Excellent and very friendly service.

The ability to mix Tapas (including pork pies!) with excellent main courses makes for a varied feast.

The ability to “play” in their cheese room and wine cellar most pleasing.

Kurumaya (76-77 Watling Street, London, EC4M 9BJ)

In a sense Kurumaya has become my Sushi/Sashimi canteen.

Wonderfully consistent quality produce marshalled by head chef Rico Venzon.

My perfect lunch runs something like this.

Salmon Sashimi
Mackerel Sashimi
Soft Shell Crab Temaki
Prawn Tempura
Gyoza
MORE Salmon Sashimi
Spicy Tuna Temaki

Produce is sourced from around the world to ensure the finest of fayre.

Best Japanese food in the City.

Hawksmoor Spitalfields (157 Commercial Street, London, E1 6BJ)

Hunting for meat is a fine pastime of many men and women … so to find the Hawksmoor was a delight.

Strongly recommended by a friend I can only describe as “The Bear” we entered the restaurant to be seated at a round table. (Always a bonus)

The Tamworth ribs quite perfect – sublime fall off the bone piggery.

The steak minimally seasoned a most satisfying mixture of blood, meat and salt. They do provide sauces to suit most other tastes.

The signature pudding – a strangely pleasing palate cleansing blood orange jelly on the blancmange base sending us home happy to dream of returning soon.

Expensive but pleasing.
