Arbutus (63-64 Frith Street, London, W1D 3JW)

We did the ‘early-bird’ pre-theatre offer on a busy Friday night and the food was excellent. The set menu was very good value for money (stops at 7pm) for the food quality. It was a busy night, so lots of tables of two packed into the space, but the service was very good with lots of personality. I'm pregnant and couldn't have either of the dessert options on the set menu (one contained raw eggs, the other soft cheese- both no-no's when pregnant) but it was explained that these were the choices, and so anything else would be additional charge. So, we were charged extra for my dessert.

It's a shame they charge extra to cater to special dietry requirements, as most restaurants are flexible with coming up with alternatives.

Although having said that, I'd go again but check the menu beforehand.

Akari (196 Essex Road, London, N1 8LZ)

Akari is quickly becoming my favourite ‘local Japanese’. I've done lots of travelling in Japan, and definately hanker after the food. Akari serves it very authentically, it tastes just as it does in Japan, it's not diluted to English taste. The place is always full of Japanese people (that's a good sign), but it can be difficult getting a table at times, so do call ahead and book. There's a mini sushi bar you can sit at where the sushi master preps it all in front of you, or you can sit in the main restaurant bit. Try Kaki Fry (that's deep fried oysters), and the grilled aubergine dish with dark miso paste on top (sorry, forgot the Japanese name). The kitchen is behind the ‘pub bar’ so you can watch all the activity whilst you eat, it makes for a great atmosphere.

The E Bar (2 Warrington Crescent, London, W9 1ER)

I took my boyfriend to E bar on a date, and it was quite romantic as it's all candle lit, with big sofas. We walked past the entrance a couple of times as we couldn't work out if we should go down the stairs or enter via the hotel (go down the stairs!). The cocktail menu has plenty on there, so we asked the waitress to talk us through, which she did. We tried an avocado cocktail, which sounds bizaar, but it actually worked. We didn't try the wine, but again the list was huge.

The tapas was good value. We shared a mixed plate of Spanish meats and cheeses. I love food you can browse and take time over, so I really enjoyed the concept. They didn't rush us at all, which makes a nice change for London!
