Champagne Charlies (17 The Arches, London, London, WC2N 6NG)

Hidden off the street, under arches, the small doorway hides a small gem of a bar / restaurant.
Ideal spot for after work drinks, friendly bar staff & plenty of places to sit whilst waiting for your friends to arrive. Waiting alone, I didn't feel awkward. The usual Davys wine list holds many good priced wines, along with specials. Bar food available of which I tried the salt encrusted pork & apple bap with crackling crisps & it didn't disappoint. Tasty, tender pork just perfect & well presented.

The Swan at Lavenham (High Street, Lavenham, Suffolk, CO10 9QA)

When you pull into the car park you know you're in for something special. The 14th century building is exquisite and the courtyards are well kept and being December, felt very festive with plenty of white lights and Christmas trees.
We had a 4 poster room booked which was stunning, beams, high up to the rafters and wonky walls! Champagne and a gorgeous hand painted water coloured birthday card of the hotel, were in our room on arrival.
Staff are friendly and extremely helpful. We went into the lounge for pre-dinner drinks, seated beside the roaring log fire and they came and found us and presented a slate plate with a selection of well made canapés.
The main restaurant again has the wow factor, plenty of space and high vaulted, beamed ceilings.
The menu is a set price at £35.95 for 3 courses and you have about 4 choices for each course. Each of our courses were tasty and well presented. Between us we had wild boar, scallops, steak and a delightful coconut panacotta with pineapple & chilli.
The only negative I can say is that no background music was played in either the bar or the restaurant and so at times it felt a little too quiet.
The hotel offers some great dine and stay packages…which I can recommend. It certainly rounds off the evening, to climb the wonky, wooden staircase up to bed and to have a long drive home.

The Drift (Heron Tower, 110 Bishopsgate, London, EC2N 4AY)

I have now visited this restaurant twice and on both occasions the food has seriously let them down.
First visit was a busy after work affair, lots of atmosphere and a really good vibe. The food however was terribly bland and cold, which was a great disappointment, as on paper it looks really great. I just put it down to a one off bad experience and took some friends there for Sunday lunch, thinking surely, they couldn't get this wrong.
If a restaurant in this area is going to open on a Sunday it needs to be good as there are fabulous places a short walk away around Spitalfields. The restaurant area is large & there was only one other table dining! No atmosphere whatsoever. Reading the description of having a large tray bought to the table & all just tucking in sounded good, but didn't materialise. We waited a good hour following our starter & when it arrived it was cold, individual servings & totally uninspired. Puddings again, sound amazing but don't deliver. However, the expresso martinis are divine, if not a bit pricey.
It's such a shame this restaurant doesn't deliver, as it has all…great venue, quirky touches, accommodating, friendly waiting staff, but the cooking seriously lets them down.
I would definitely return to the bar after work, but wouldn't recommend the dining experience.

Swan at the Globe (21 New Globe Walk, London, London, SE1 9DT)

We wandered in just after noon on a Sunday, due to the great look of the place from the outside.
The 1st floor restaurant is for serious food, we were just after a
drink & maybe some bar food.
What a Find!!!
We entered the ground floor bar & were seated with a great view of the Thames. The interior is great, plenty of sharing tables & a very relaxed, chilled out vibe. The bar staff / waitresses all wear quirky black dresses.
We chose the hot salt beef sandwich & a croque monsieur (brunch is served until 3pm on Sundays) I cannot rave about the food enough…fresh, tasty & plenty of it…served with the largest chips ever seen! The price of the food is so reasonable, it beggars belief…especially when you know, a further walk along the Thames & the pubs that serve this sort of fare, cannot compare!
Drinks are more pricey, a jug of Pimms was £22.00…but was delicious & not just overfilled with lemonade. Plenty of strawberries, mint & cucumber.
I can't wait to return & can't recommend enough, that if you're after a brief stop off along the Thames Path…this is the place to be. Don't even think of going into the other soulless pubs along this route.

Gaucho Canary (29 Westferry Circus, London, E14 8RR)

We arrived very early for our table but was made to feel this was no problem at all & were seated at a great table. The interior is great, very black, lit by chandeliers..with plenty of cowhide coverings, it just looks like a great place to want to eat. I can't praise our waitress enough, she was superb. She bought to our table a large board with all the cuts of the beef on & explained how each was served & made it feel personal to your liking of steak. We decided on a cut to share & I can honestly say I have never had a steak with so much flavour before. It was It was coated with a mouth watering “Chimmichura” which had a fabulous, salty, slightly spicy taste. We had ordered sides, but we agreed the taste of the steak was so amazing these are so not necessary…a simple salad would be all you need to accompany it.
As we had ordered champagne, the waitress made it her business to ask if we celebrating, which in turn led to a “Happy Birthday” plate being served at the end of our meal, containing the most amazing coffee tart, ice cream & candle. What a great touch!
By the time we left the whole restaurant & bar was buzzing. There was even cocktail lessons going on at the other end of the bar. The whole feel of the place was delightful, and as we left & the sun was setting over the Thames, a huge liner was making it's way past.
We will definately be returning & would recommend this place to anybody with a love for steak.

Restaurant Critic

El Camion (25-27 Brewer Street, London, London, W1F 0RR)

On arriving the door was closed with the closed sign showing, even though it was 12.15pm, this was indeed a sign that we should have turned around & chose another restaurant. The decor is very kitsch & basic & there was no real atmosphere to the place. We waited 10mins for our wine & when it arrived the bottle was warm. My husband wanted the crayfish starter & was told “no we don't have crayfish” no apologies, we both then ordered the calamari & waited 45 mins for it to arrive. (Bearing in mind at this point, we were the only diners in there!) When it arrived in its plastic basket, I couldn't believe my eyes, it resembled a mountain of greasy baked batter. We honestly couldn't even stab it with our forks. The waitress came over to see what was wrong & even she was shaking her head. She took it away & we waited another 10mins for the replacement. Although cooked properly this time, the batter had no seasoning to it & tasted like wallpaper paste…it was vile & we both left it. For main, we chose enchiladas & although tasty, it was only just warm & the cheese covering the whole plate was like it had been on there a week & had formed a kind of skin. It hadn't been baked or grilled…it's hard to explain.
We couldn't wait to leave & felt angry that we chose this place when it's surrounded by some of the most fantastic restaurants. To round up the experience the card machine was having problems & after 3 attempts the waitress gave back the card & said we would have to pay cash. My husband then had to traipse all the way to Carnaby Street to where he knew there was a ATM, when I asked the waitress if she knew of a closer one she said “no”
Service is added on to the bill & stupidly after all this we paid it. There was no gesture given. The management obviously have a don't care attitude.
I don't believe this place will survive until the end of the year & if it is really owned by Terence Conran's son, well then it certainly doesn't run in the family & he would do well to take some… More

Sophie's Steakhouse (29-31 Wellington Street, London, London, WC2E 7DB)

Met a friend here for pre theatre lunch & drinks on a Saturday. The place fills up really quickly which adds to the feel of the place, which is very New York warehouse style, great lights & floral display.
Food is really good & portion sizes are spot on. I had the chicken pie which was so tasty & the red skin mash was divine Great wine list, although the waitress did seem put out that we wouldn't order the special wine that was on offer for that day, we ended up with the house white which was really good.
I've been here a few times & would always go back for this type of food, it knocks spots off the usual chain type places!

The Luxe (109 Commercial Street, London, London, E1 6BG)

This restaurant is situated upstairs in this lovely building. Six of us sat comfortably at one of the booth tables & was not disappointed, the open kitchen is fun to watch & really friendly staff add to the great atmosphere here. Knowing the restaurant & visiting in the week, we were worried that during our weekend visit it would lack atmosphere and numbers, but we needn't have worrried, all six of us had a great time. The food was presented well & timely & you could taste the quality of each dish. My only nag would be that the specials were not presented anywhere with their price, only described by our waitress, needless to say that four of our party ordered the individual beef wellingtons & these ended up on the bill as being the priciest items on the menu!
After dinner we were told that the DJ was in the basement so we took the glass elevator down to find a great little space where we danced the night away until midnight. The bouncers did become a bit over the top at 12pm where you literally had to leave your drink & the building in double quick time. It's just a shame it couldn't have lasted longer, a great night was had by all & I would thoroughly recommend it to anybody. A lovely restaurant with a relaxed, chilled out vibe.

Bill’s Produce Store (The Depot, 100 North Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 1YE)

I've been here for breakfast now a couple of times whilst visiting friends in Brighton & I can honestly say this is the place to go if you're in the know! It is in the North Laines & not easily found.
Get here early as the queue grows quickly on a Sunday morning.
I can only describe the place as an old converted warehouse, but once inside it's a true Emporium. Long, wooden communal tables make up the seating area & you are completely surrounded by bays of groceries, carts of fresh fruit & veg and more. The cakes here are truly exceptional & I have never seen their like before, not even in top stores, restaurants etc in London. Don't attempt to photograph them though as I was sternly told it was not allowed!
They are adorned with all manner of fresh grasses & flowers & not even shown on their website.
The food is all organic & truly tasty. The full English was fabulous & even that manages to come with edible pansies!
Boiled eggs are delivered to the table in an assortment of hotch potch egg cups, some I've not seen since childhood.
They have just got the whole place right. In the summer months you can get made up picnic boxes for the beach, containing all manner of good old fashioned goodies.
It's the sort of place that you just have to tell everybody about, it would be a shame if you didn't visit.

Clos Maggiore (33 King Street, London, London, WC2E 8JD)

If you book a table here, ask to be seated in the conservatory. It was the picture of this area on their website that made my decision to book, only to find that area full & we were seated in another part of the restaurant near to the bar.
As it was a special treat, I felt slightly miffed not to be seated in this area, but luck was on my side & without asking, we were approached & told a cancellation had come up & would we like to move to the conservatory. It's absolutely fabulous & a great spot if you're out for a romantic dining experience. The area only has around 12 tables & is spacious in it's setting. Trees adorned with fake blossom, twinkling fairy lights & a roaring log fire set the scene.
The food & service is exceptionally good, staff are friendly & helpful.Deserts really are a work of art & taste like heaven. The wine list is large but expensive & I didn't think there was a particularly great champagne choice.
They do offer a fixed price lunch menu with wine included which is great value for money, and is why I'm returning shortly for a pre theatre treat…& I'm so looking forward to it.

Vertigo 42 (Level 42, 25 Old Broad STREET, London, EC2N 1HQ)

Returned to this bar in the clouds for celebration drinks. You have to book in advance as you are required to sit at a dedicated area, facing out towards London…your table is a large window ledge.
On entering it really has the WOW factor, you can see the whole of London & beyond & it's great fun pointing out the landmarks.
The staff are extremely attentive & constantly top up your glass, so you finish sooner & buy another bottle!
We ordered the canapes & they were tasty, if not a bit on the small side. I must say though that the champagne prices have definately increased dramatically over the past year, which is no wonder then why most people now seem to opt for wine instead.
If you're out to impress somebody, book an hour here & they won't be dissapointed…any longer & you won't have any money left for dinner afterwards :-)

Loungelover (1 Whitby Street, London, E1 6JU)

Have been here many times for after work drinks, but this visit was with a group of friends celebrating a birthday.
Again, we didn't come here to eat, just to drink the fabulous cocktails. The cocktail book is vast & all they are described to perfection. All arrive at the table with a wow factor, colours, fruits & edible flowers.
The atmosphere definately improves as the evening progresses. We arrived for 6.30pm & it was very quiet. Staff are very attentive & friendly. The interior is eclectic & a great talking point…disco balls, stuffed animals. A great place to check out, even if it's a little off the beaten track.

Kenza (10 Devonshire Square, London, London, EC2M 4YP)

Editor's pick

Tucked away in Devonshire Square, but right on top of Liverpool Street, this place is a real gem. Visited here with girlfriends on a Friday night & took advantage of the 50% off food offered by Squaremeal. I think without this, the food would be deemed as quite expensive, but great value for money with!
On arriving, the courtyard/walkway to the restaurant is covered with candles, morrocan floor rugs & rose petals, leading you down the winding staircase down to the large basement restaurant.
Very atmosheric & decorated in a sumptious style. Staff very attentive, friendly & helpful.
We ordered 6 dishes from the Meze starters & all were well presented & extremely tasty. The main dishes were delicious too & portion size was good. We had the chicken & lamb kebabs which came on long, metal skewers on ornate brass oval platters, with flat breads, salad & the tastiest rice any of us had ever eaten… very impressive.
At around 9.15pm, the music is turned up & belly dancers perform at your tables & you are encouraged to get up & try your hand, great fun.
The toilets deserve a mention too, Morrocan in style with fantastic, brass hand basin/trough…& sweet smelling :-)
I believe you could enjoy this restaurant for any occasion whether with friends or a romantic meal for two. I will be returning & will request the booth type tables which are enclosed with ornate carved wooden canopies. Great if there's six or more of you.

Fifteen Cornwall (On the beach, Watergate Bay, near Newquay, Cornwall, TR8 4AA)

Flew into Newquay airport & was pleased to find the restaurant just a 10 minute ride away.
Absolutey my favourite restaurant of the year. The setting is just amazing, it's as if the restaurant has been carved into the cliff face & overlooks the most stunning beach. The windows are floor to ceiling & span the entire length of the place. The decor is fab & the open kitchen makes for a great spectacle. I had the best risotto I have ever tasted & all of our party argued that each of their dishes was the best! Service was great, really friendly…as if they had been taught by the man himself. Every aspect of the dining experience has been thought of & this is truly one of those places you just have to visit.
The only downside to this place is that if you visit on a gorgeous day they have no outside space, although if you can nab a window table, these open back. The day we visited it was pouring down so we were not disappointed. All I can say is bag yourself a cheap flight & get down there! Truly Fab.

Frederick's (106 Islington High Street, Camden Passage, London, N1 8EG)

Visited Fredericks for an early lunch on a Saturday. Not much atmosphere early on but by the time we left the place was filling up & it felt more lived in.
We went for the set lunch, options were reduced & so was the price, but the food was tasty & well presented. Great wine list. Our table was situated in the conservatory & at times felt a little cold. It would also benefit having the roof cleaned as when the sun shined through the perspex roof, it was awfully dirty which didn't compliment the surroundings.
