Smollensky's on the Strand (105 Strand, London, WC2R 0AA)

We booked Smollenskys for our children as it has magician and bits on for them on a Sunday and its hard finding somewhere that they will enjoy. After a museum visit we drove round and parked up…very excited! But so disappointed, took ages to be seated – no staff. Our waitress stunk of cigarettes, the magician was old and had no real interest in the children, most of the other HORRORS were running about while parents gulped down booze, pulling the dressed up cows tail to make it fall over, screaking at the magician for more balloon animals and barging infront of the little one and constant screaming.
The food was so quick and brown where it had been microwaved on high and the choice of green food was disgusting…I'm not a mum who harps on about veg but a choice would have been nice. I hate having to have bloody chips with everything which was the case. Over £50 for the 4 of us with no booze (wish I had got really drunk to take away the shrill screaming all through the meal).
A complete waste of money and journey – even the kids couldn't wait to get out the door and away from the 1940's style tricks!

The Brickhouse (The Old Truman Brewery, 152c Brick Lane, London, London, E1 6RU)

Went tonight for the £55 set menu – our table was facing the stage and some of our party couldn't see the stage area – the enterainment was ok – the best being the lady introducing the acts (the juggler dropped more than he juggled!), it was all very bland, music was dreamlike during the acts, where as it could have been more lively and lifted the atmosphere. Tables next to us were empty which didn't help.
Food was nice, but small portions – we all went for bagels afterwards, coffee wasn't offered at the end of the meal and drinks were pricey. No-one was drunk and the bill was £170 per couple. Wouldn't go back and a bit disappointed after reading great reviews.

Nobu Berkeley St (bar) (15 Berkeley Street, London, W1J 8DY)

Just spent the evening at Nobu – our first and probably only visit with another couple of friends (bill £586 for the four of us) we had the £85 set meal. The music was very loud and it didn't help being seated next to a group of ultra trendy idiots who chose to sing and shout for most of the evening. The food was lovely, but I'm still hungry! The place is basic but worth a trip if you are just going to BE SEEN! But tonight it was full of eastern europeans, fat sugar daddies with very young girls and prostitutes. Other than that the crowd was 20-25, all very drunk. Food was gorgeous, but for the cash it was very rushed, you'd just put your chop sticks down from one course to have it quickly replaced by another and so on – you felt like you were on a treadmill as soon as you arrived.
For the cash I like to feel like I'm being looked after, rather than 'you are here because we say it's okay, and you should feel honoured to be here and give us your money!'
Going to give Roka a try…as we won't be going back to Nobu!
