The food was everything I expected it to be. The fruit meat was one of the most beautiful plates I have been served.
The duck breast was excellent, nice and pink, the pineapple dessert delicious. My companion decided that ordering champagne was better than wine for lunch. Each glass was £14, so that was a bit pricey. Service was excellent. Our only regret was that we didn't have room for the icecream made at the table. Next time…

Wheeler's (72-73 St James's Street, London, SW1A 1PH) There's a reason the place is always half – or 3/4- empty. I was invited for my birthday and, despite the two back rooms having plenty of space- we were put in the front room surrounded by city types making too much noise.The food was a disappointment. I ordered fish and chips, what could be easier for a restaurant known for its seafood?
A small brown cylinder- I swear- arrived. I asked the waitress if this was the fish, as it looked more like a miniature loaf of bread.The fish was tasteless and the dessert was better, but how difficult is it to mess up an Eton mess? I suggest the landlord start looking for a new tenant, because this place is surviving on it's good looks.

2 Veneti (10 Wigmore Street, London, London, W1U 2RD) We've had two lovely dinners here in the past few weeks. The first was excellent- raviolis stuffed with veal in a rosemary and butter sauce and the seafood risotto were outstanding. Last night the liver was perfectly cooked and the raviolis with truffle fondue sauce was very good. The service was memorable- our waiter Marco was helpful, attentive and -without overstepping his role- lots of fun. And always a good sign-the restaurant was full of Italians.

I was taken here for my birthday in January. Lovely approach to the house and to see it with no tourists roaming around. But things went downhill from there. My salmon carpaccio was tasteless, much better the pate of my dining partner but arrived with only ONE toast. My main, pike with chorrizo and lentils, was so salty I sent it back, something I have not done in years. I was brought the beef which is what my partner was eating. Not great either. Dry vegetables and at £10 a glass, the vapid Chianti was a rip off.

Bodean's Soho (10 Poland Street, London, London, W1F 8PZ) Three of us ate there last night and each ordered a different kind of ribs. All three portions arrived overcooked. It was as if- and this may be how they serve so quickly- that the food is prepared in advance and them simply warmed up when ordered. The bbq mayonaise was tasteless, even after adding hot sauce. The chips were good as was the cole slaw. But if you really want good bar b que- go half a block down the street to the Cattle Grid. They do their ribs to order and the sauce is memorable.
