Manicomio (85 Duke of York Square, London, SW3 4LY)

Manicomia – if you take out the ‘omia’ the ‘Manic’ was certainly our experience yesterday! Everything one and everything was buzzing, the sun was shining and the bottle of rose we selected was a dream but oh dear, it all started to go wrong. After a very long wait and nearly ready to order our second bottles of water and wine the main courses arrived. Woops they forgot to give us our starter, the reknowned antipasta, our waiter denied that we had ordered a starter but was encouraged to check his order book to find that we had indeed asked for one. We said no major problem declined the offer of just having our main courses and the wait began. We waited and waited, dish after dish of antipasta passed by us but one never stopped at our table despite pointing out that an hour later we had not eaten. Finally it arrived, gorgeous, mouth watering choice of goodies. Duly satisfied our main course arrived I had delicious veal on a bed of lettuce with asparagus etc. but it was cold. This was blamed on the poor salad underneath, we thought it was our original served up dish being returned to us. Needless to say hot, warm or cold it was divine. The red mullet was also greatly appreciated. Oh! they forgot to give us our rocket and parmesan salad. We were served with the best biscotti we have ever had with our coffees (of which we need two, as you can imagine after two bottles of wine!).

Will we return – you bet, we love the place and will always remember our adventure yesterday with fond memories and our thanks to the Manager who was excellent in sorting everything out.

The Botanist (7 Sloane Square, London, London, SW1W 8EE)

We arrived at The Botanist for lunch. Overall the meal was up to its usual high standard, staff are always helpful and courteous but with I think it was 2 staff to a full restaurant, wine refilling and any requests were difficult to achieve and kept breaking into our conversations.

I had jerusalem artichoke soup – tasty but rather watery. My friend had a lovely salad of red endive, walnuts and all sorts of yummy ingredients. All was going well until my friend reached nearly the end of her salad to see a long dark hair on the bottom of the plate in the dressing underneath a piece of chicory and another one after that. We called the waiter over who was apologetic and took the plate to show the Manager.

A few minutes the Manager came over to our table, dropped to his knees and explained that he had been down to the kitchen and no one down there had long hair so it must have got there after leaving the kitchen. Now the implication was not at all acceptable and my friend who can eat there at least twice a week was mortally offended. The Manager said we would not be charged for the salad – I should hope so too and off he went, There was not even a coffee on the house by way of an apology – I think they need to shake up their ideas and realise that their customers do not eat there to contrive a free meal. You will notice for service I have rated 1 – this is based purely on The Manager!! The main courses were delicious and this part of the meal ran smoothly.

We will eat there again but hope that they buck up their customer relations side of the restaurant.
