Portrait Restaurant & Bar at the National Portrait Gallery (National Portrait Gallery, St Martin's Place, London, London, WC2H 0HE)

Undeniably offers a great view out over Big Ben but the whole experience was a bit of a let-down due to the service. We were seated at our table, but as we were waiting for two people to join our party who were coming separately, we were just left alone without even a drinks order.

The restaurant closes quite early and even at only 8pm we felt like it was the end of the night and the staff had given up. General drinks service, order taking, plate clearing was quite lax. I had to remind the waiter to bring my tea which I ordered instead of dessert, but even then they brought the wrong one.

The food however was a different experience entirely. Excellent presentation, seasonal food, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Not wanting a large dinner I ordered a vegetarian quiche which was really flavoursome. Food envy got the better of me however as my fellow diners tucked into the confit duck leg and guinea fowl which were equally spectacular.

I will go back for another try – but perhaps at lunchtime when staff are hopefully a little more on the ball.

Foundation Bar (5 Langley Street, London, WC2H 9JA)

Generally quite a good bar, quite a buzzy atmosphere, especially as we went on a Wednesday night. I had reserved an area for my group of friends and was glad I did as every other table was booked up too.

The presentation of everything is well thought out and quirky – food menus printed onto old vinyl and drinks served from jam jars! Good selection of cocktails too.

The food menu however leaves a lot to be desired – nothing very exciting to snack on easily. We ordered a couple of the small bites to share, but they were so small we could have done with a lot more. It was more style than substance. The pulled pork spring rolls were really tasty, just could have done with more. My friend ordered the burger which was basic but adequate.

The early happy hour is definitely a bonus, with all drinks half price until 7.30pm. We were having a little celebration and worked our way through several bottles of the prosecco which was really good value for money. Disappointed we weren’t trusted with real glasses though and were given plastic flutes to drink from instead!

Would go back, but definitely book an area and eat beforehand!
