Hix Oyster & Chop House (36-37 Greenhill Rents, London, EC1M 6BN)

An excellent restaurant that doesn't take itself too seriously but still serves seriously good food. I been looking forward to going here for some time having seen the owner on a couple of cookery TV shows. I was not disappointed.

The room looks excellent and had a fantastic atmosphere the evening that we went. The menu is very ‘meaty’ but why shouldn't it be – it is after all described as a chop house. The wine list is very reasonable and has a good range. The warm loaf of bread and butter were lovely and we were offered filtered water immediately!

I had a rib eye steak that cooked too perfection with the right amount of chew and flavour. It was huge and therefore despite appearing expensive on the menu not too bad value. The side orders were all excellent and exactly what you would have wanted. The bearnaise sauce was delicious!

It is expensive but I think is just about worth it.

The pudding selection was slightly limited but really again isn't the focus of this restaurant.

The service was attentive and friendly. We had a charming young waitress who was working there to save money to go travelling and was an absolute credit to the restaurant.

This place is ideal for a group of friends or a ‘boys’ night out.

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay (68 Royal Hospital Road, London, SW3 4HP)

Editor's pick

Wonderful service ensured a memorable evening much more than the food.

The food is very good and the signature starter dish of the ravioli is exceptional. But I think it just needs some fresh inspiration. I have had better meals in other restaurants in the UK. I left just feeling that it hadn't quite fulfilled my expectations. It was all very impressive but for a three star kitchen, it just seemed to be missing something. I had the lamb for the main course which was tasty but of a standard you can now get in many hotels and restaurants in the UK. We had the selection of desserts – some were good but none were fantastic. The amuse bouches were very underwhelming.

The service though was the best I have ever had anywhere! Excellent from the Sommelier (who gave me welcome and economic advice) through to the Maitre D'.

It just seems that overall the main guy might not have his eye on the essential ball as much as he should – namely the food and making it better than anywhere else.
