Bar du Musee (17 Nelson Road, London, SE10 9JB)

Despite the rude bouncers and the high prices, this bar is very popular. There aren't a lot of places to drink after 12am in Greenwich…

Franklins (157 Lordship Lane, London, SE22 8HX)

It's certainly atmospheric, and the menu looks extremely interesting and ambitious. It's just that they can't really produce it to a high enough standard.

I ordered pigeon, and it was so raw I had to send it back – not pink and juicy, just red and bloody. The girlfriend was hardly overwhelmed by her plaice either.

It's not great food and not good value, but the place does have a certain charm. Maybe drinks and nibbles are the safest option…

Applecross Inn (Shore Street, Applecross, Highlands, IV54 8LR)

A quite incredible place, and not just because of the location. Arriving late, we had trouble finding a B&B for the night – no problem, as it turned out: the landlady phoned around for us and procured one. Then I needed to phone my work, but couldn't get reception on the mobile. No problem – a small donation to the local mountain rescue people, and I could use the pub's phone. They couldn't be more welcoming. One evening spent drinking in the bar, and we'd not only sorted out a place to stay, but a sea-kayaking course for the next day and a range of walking routes. And we'd even stopped arguing.

The food is exceptional – the seafood is straight out of the bay, cooked to perfection, and incredibly good value (although, unfortunately, I do live in London). My only complaint was that they had run out of lobster when I arrived (late). So only 9.5 out of ten.

Oh – and the Applecross peninsular, with its views across to Skye and visiting basking sharks, is quite special too…
