Kitchen W8 (11-13 Abingdon Rd, London, W8 6AH)

A real gem… a nice looking restaurant (if decored a little like wallpaper showroom) coupled with welcoming service and really top notch cooking…

The star of the show for us was their BYO offering – a real gem of an offer (for a £15 corkage fee). We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Krug I was given not long ago which somehow felt too nice to open at home. This shouldn't detract from the wine list – which itself had some cracking choices on it – all fairly priced.

Rather amusing & quirky crowd of locals too (though not sure they'd see themselves as that).

Can't wait to go again.

Les Deux Salons (40-42 William IV Street, Strand, London, WC2N 4DD)

Editor's pick

A welcome newcomer – Les Deux Salons takes on the much-tried French brasserie formula and delivers extremely well on (nearly) all fronts. A grand room, welcoming service, and outstanding food. Special mention to the lamb sweetbreads (sublime) and the ox cheek main course (meltingly tender).

Food alone deserves a 10, but unfortunately the wine was a slight let down. The approach – namely a shorter list with all wines available in 250ml carafes – is to be applauded. However the whites were served at near room temperature, the rhone red too young, and they'd run out of the St Emilion. This alone probably won't stop me returning – but they need to work on this, particularly with Terroirs just down the road.

On the whole a thoroughly enjoyable evening. I hope they can maintain high cooking standard when they're packed to the rafters…

Trishna (15-17 Blandford Street, London, W1U 3DG)

Appalling service and a lack of staff professionalism. We dined last night using SquareMeal's 25% food discount and were made to feel like second class citizens. Twice the maitre'd publicly (and embarrasingly) questioned the validity of the offer I agreed on booking. What followed was farcical: a number of the dishes on the menu were unavailable. Since our wine was hidden from us, waiters had to be repeatedly called to fill our wine glasses. Upon leaving the restaurant we noticed in a bucket half a bottle of our dessert wine remaining – the waiter conceded he'd completely forgotton it was ours. With so much better competition in the area (e.g. The Colony) this kind of amateurism is unacceptable at this price.

Following the above visit in April… we decided to pay Trishna another visit on Saturday night (Aug) since we were in the area. It was a different and much improved experience compared to the last time I was there. Service was helpful and on the right side of friendly. Food and service were outstanding. Our guests – both vegetarian – asked for a dish not on the menu (something any indian restaurant should easily manage- particularly for veggies) – they were very accommodating. The duck seekh kebabs were special. On the waiter's strong recommendation we tried the marinated roast pheasant – its not one we'd have ordinarily gone for but it was beautiful. This dish alone is one we will probably go back for. Special mention should also go to the wine list. An often neglected and frequently overpriced element of some indian restaurants. Last saturday we enjoyed their well thought out range with some interesting good value choices.

Indali Lounge (50 Baker Street, London, W1U 7BT)

I dined there for the first time last Friday lunchtime. Its a beautiful looking room – I would imagine it comes alive during weekend evenings. However food quality is poor – chicken/lamb kebabs tasted awful (like they were out of a packet). The nan served to us was too thick and raw in the middle. When I pointed this out to the waitress she had the audacity to question my judgement! The only slight redemption was the aloo chaat – which was at best average. Its a place that needs to improve in a host of ways, particularly with so much better competition in the immediate vicinity.

Terroirs (5 William Street, London, WC2N 4DW)

For food, wine and atmosphere Terroirs consistently delivers. Knowledgeable and friendly staff navigate you through London's best wine list. Small sharing plates of simple well prepared French food complement the wine brilliantly.
