Galvin Bistrot de Luxe (66 Baker Street, London, W1U 7DJ)

Consistently good and a great venue for family occaisions. You know you are in safe pair of hands when you go to Galvins bistrot. Menu is reasonabily classic and service is normally quite good but its the food you go for and it doesn't fail to please. I've been to its sister restaurant, Windows only once before and was less impressed! More expensive and too formal for me but I guest thats Park Lane for you, view of Hyde Park may be worth a visit if you are new to London! Definitely would recommend the bistrot.

Tapas Brindisa (18-20 Southwark Street, London, SE1 1TJ)

After Barrafina my favourite Spanish restaurant in London although no booking policy and long waits can put me off going but I guess thats what is about. Food is good and its got a great atmosphere…also like the simple interior and location on the corner of Borough Market is fab! There are also a couple of good pubs in the market (the Market Porter and Wheatsheaf) so you can always go for a drink while you are waiting (it has got its own bar) but this can also get busy. Otherwise a wonder around he market is always worth it…

Amaya (Halkin Arcade, 19 Motcomb Street, London, SW1X 8JT)

Great Modern Indian…love the food cooked on the grill and has a great atmosphere. I don't really like this part of town…too ‘Knightsbridge’ for me but its worth the trip. Good place to go with a big table and share…prices on the high side so better if someone else is picking up the bill.

Bob Bob Ricard (1 Upper James Street, London, W1F 9DF)

Editor's pick

I generally only write reviews about places I like but his place was just too much! Had drinks in the bar downstairs on what has got to be the most ill conceived bar fit out I've probably ever seen…David Collins (who I'm generally a fan of) should know better. Has he tried sitting at one of the bar tables? I defy you to get your legs under the table..its just wrong! Call me mad but I actually quite like the idea behind the menu…its all comfort food favourites but needs updating and is overpriced. eggs with mayaonnaise and anchovies were just that…I actually enjoyed them but very dated…in a less designed space at more reaonsable prices the idea could work…depending how deep the owners pockets are I give this place 12 months.

Would probably work in St Tropez!

Hix Oyster & Chop House (36-37 Greenhill Rents, London, EC1M 6BN)

Honest food, cooked well with the focus on the quality of the ingredients…service was unpredictable but friendly. I liked the simple interior and silver hotelware for veg dishes…makes a change to over-designed ‘silliness’ (aka…Bob Bob Ricard – what is that about? see my review on this place). Talking of ‘silliness’, prices at Hix are over the top…I know ingredients are ‘top notch’ but this is too much. Half your prices and this place would be the perfect local. But what do I know, Hix is ‘hot’ and the ‘great and the good’ pack the place out.

Good food, great atmosphere and experienced staff (better than Scotts in my opinion).

Yauatcha (15 Broadwick Street, London, London, W1F 0DL)

I can't believe I continue to recommend this place…everytime I go I'm kept waiting for the table and then they ask for it back after two hours or less if you are kept waiting but love the food and the ambience…also much better value than Hakassan (although I'm also a fan for a special occassion). It's a shame that they changed the tea room upstairs into an extension of the restaurant…I know they kept the patisserie but its just not the same, it was just so ‘beautiful’. Definitely ask to sit downstairs when you make your booking.

Barrafina (54 Frith Street, London, W1D 4SL)

I just love this place…everything about it is so right! Gets busy and doesn't take bookings so you want to get there early or late. You don't really want to be more than 2 people as all seating is at the bar (except for a few tables outside that I would avoid). Would also try to sit at one end of the bar or on the corner for more room. Try any of the long list of specials…had some delicious pigs cheeks at the recommendation of our waiter/barman and they were ‘melt in your mouth’ delicious. Hart brothers should stick to the Spanish formla…I wasn't so keen on there re-incarnation of Quo Vardis…all a bit grown up and dull. Fino is also good but Barrafina is better!

Cha Cha Moon (15-21 Ganton Street, London, W1F 9BN)

Alan Yau is the best…who else could put this together? Went soon after opening to Canarby Street branch and couldn't believe the value for money. Prices have since gone up but still great value. Not sure about the branch at Whitelys…but find Whitelys totally bizare! Also not sure about some of the more unusual brands of soft drinks at Cha Cha Moon…Coca Cola just can't be improved on but otherwise all top notch…a ‘Chinese Wagammas’ but better, feels less like a chain.

Roka (37 Charlotte Street, London, W1T 1RR)

Great menu, fantastic food and friendly, knowledgeable staff…expensive but worth it and better value than its sister restaurant Zuma. I also like the design and suggest sitting at the counter to eat, on the corner if you can…bar downstairs is also worth a visit.

Cecconi's (5a Burlington Gardens, London, W1S 3EP)

Italian comfort food with some interesting small plates but go for the ambience and ‘people watching’ as well as the pasta. Also went for lunch on the weekend with our son and sat on the banquette…staff were great and accommodated an off menu request for our youngest. Also good for a breakfast meeting and a coffee at the bar counter. Good value if you choose ‘wisely’.
