Wild Honey (12 St George Street, London, W1S 2FB)

Overall a good option in Mayfair.

I've eaten here twice now and both times the food has been reasonably priced (for the area!). I've stuck to the set menu -and have enjoyed the quality of the cooking and the variety.

Staff are efficient and friendly enough. Basically a great post-shopping/ pre-theatre restaurant with a bit more life and buzz to it than many of it's Mayfair competitors.

Hibiscus (29 Maddox Street, London, W1S 2PA)

The food was exceptional. It's expensive. It's worth it.

We were a party of four: two Londoners and two New Yorkers. We loved it – it's a place to go if you want the absolute best food and don't care about the price.

I am far too well mannered, but actually, I would have liked to have licked my pudding plate clean.

The restaurant itself is fairly plain but still somehow warm. The staff are friendly and there is no hint of snootiness often associated with our cousins across the Chanel.

Our waiter's heavy French accent added comedy value, as we had no clue what we were ordering, even with the explanation. It didn't matter. It was all exquisite.

Crazy Bear (26-28 Whitfield Street, London, W1T 2RG)

The decor and atmosphere in this place is fantastic, and the bar downstairs is a great place to meet up for a first date – intriguing, sexy and very low lighting.

In fact, the lighting in the restaurant is also really low and our table of six all had trouble reading the menu, unless we were right next to the candles. (And we are not THAT old).

Overall, this is a very pleasant experience. The food was OK – not amazing or memorable, but I came away happy and full.

Chez Bruce (2 Bellevue Road, London, SW17 7EG)

Excellent food, excellent service. And consistent over many years.

Only gripe is that the tables are close together, so you wouldn't want to be having any sort of important conversation — but that's only really a problem when dining as a couple.

The cheese board is the best in London. Fantastic selection and unlike some places they are not at all stingy, and you get to try everything you like the look of. Cannot recommend enough.
