Read the thread November 2010If the strike goes ahead, will people still be putting on fireworks for bonfire night? I'm thinking it could be a good idea to invest in event insurance..? More
Read the thread November 2010I can't believe the fees some hotels in London charge for internet access. It should really be a free service but, if they must charge, why don't they just incorporate it into the DDR / room rate? More
Read the thread November 2010In Spain, they have this tradition where everyone has to eat 12 grapes at midnight – one for every chime of the bell. Obviously, there's not enough time to chew them all so people end up looking like hamsters, with their cheeks full of grapes. Always a laugh! Health and safety might have issues with it, though… More
Read the thread July 2010So we're half-way through the season. Who's been out and about at hospitality events? I'd love to hear your thoughts on which ones have been the best. More
Read the thread June 2010So the current trend in dress codes seems to be to try and be clever and different. In the last few weeks, I've been invited to events where the dress code has just been ‘vibrant’ or ‘glam’. How are you supposed to deal with that? More
Read the thread June 2010I like the roof terrace on top of the Clarendon pub in W11 More
Read the thread April 2010So I'd thought spring had arrived… Got 15 mates coming round for a BBQ this Saturday but the weather doesn't look rosy. What can I cook that's quick and easy to eat out of bowls? It'll be standing room only if we're forced to stay indoors. More
Read the thread March 2010Have a look at Emma's ‘people bingo’ idea in my ice-breaker post – I reckon that'd be great fun at a party: venues-events-talk/ice-breaker-ideas#p160695 More
Read the thread March 2010Go to the Channel 4 iplayer thingy and look up Heston Blumenthal's Victorian feast – some very cool ideas in that programme! More
Read the thread March 2010What's to say they don't get a great new caterer, John? I personally think venues are right to change their suppliers from time to time – keeps things fresh. More
Read the thread February 2010Is anyone else having problems with regular networking events becoming to clique-y (same people talking to each other every month)? Do you think some kind of ice-breaker would mix things up a bit? I'm looking for something that will stop people from just talking to their mates. Any ideas much appreciated! More
Read the thread February 2010What about Altidute? Everyone seems to be talking about that at the moment. More
Read the thread February 2010Bring it on! Sounds really good. More
Read the thread December 2009I'm looking to organise a surprise birthday party for a friend who's crazy about Mexican food – the good stuff, not cheapo tex mex. Does anyone know a good venue for that? I don't think the Wahacas take party bookings, do they? More
Read the thread November 2009What do we think? Would the X-Factor twins make fun xmas entertainment? Does anyone know what they'd charge? More
Read the thread November 2009Thanks guys – I'll check it out. Sounds good. Something a bit different for the City anyway. More
Read the thread November 2009I think this would have been a great idea for selling spare seats at shared party nights but not booking big parties for hundreds of guests. As Charlie says, how is anyone going to put thousands of pounds through their PayPal account? More
Read the thread November 2009I read in Restaurant magazine that it was going to be a 70-cover cafe serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. That sounds like it won't be open to the public at dinner, so you'd imagine they'd be open to suggestions with regards to events. More
Read the thread November 2009What a cool idea! Looks quite expensive though. More
Read the thread November 2009Me too – Somerset House is still my favourite, but I also like the Natural History Museum one. Haven't been to Tower Hill so can't comment on that one. Canary Wharf has one too now, right? Anyone been to that one? More
Read the thread November 2009I missed the Kanaloa launch last night – did anyone go? And what did you think? More
Read the thread August 2009The Jazz Cafe in Camden is really good but you need to check the listings before you go as it's not all jazz. I've also heard there's a new blues bar opening in Camden this autumn on the site of the Oh Bar. More
Read the thread July 2009My brother did Thai food at his wedding reception. It was many years ago now but I remember it was very good. Think it was Lettice that did the catering. More
Read the thread July 2009I had a great time at a party in the HAC grounds (funfair and all) a few years back but I gather it's run by different organisers now. Are the shared nights there still good? And would it work for a group of 30? It'd be great to hear feedback from someone who went last year. Thanks! More
Read the thread July 2009Thanks guys! I think there's going to be about 30 of us so we're thinking of doing a shared night at a larger venue to get a bit more atmosphere. Quite a tricky group size, 30 – too big for many restaurant PDRs but not quite large enough for the nice big venues. More
Read the thread July 2009I've noticed a lot of christmas party emails doing the rounds this week. I appreciate organisers wanting to encourage companies to ‘get in early’ and there seems to be a few good incentives out there at the moment but would I not be better off holding out for a late deal in December? More
Read the thread July 2009I think a good host should elaborate beyond your usual ‘smart casual’ dress code descriptions. If you're able to tell guests things like ‘most people wear trousers’ or 'there's a lot of walking involved so wear flat shoes' it shows you know the event. More
Read the thread July 2009I guess that depends on the invitation. If it's for a venue launch or showcase event that's obviously been planned for some time, you'd want to be given more than a couple of days' notice but I'd happily drop everything for last-minute hospitality at The O2 – no questions asked!
