Club Gascon (57 West Smithfield, London, London, EC1A 9DS)

I met a friend for lunch here and I have to say it was a lovely surprise. The restaurant is small and cosy and the staff are very attentive. We had the set lunch (three choices on each course) and apart from pudding we had the same. We had the duck fois gras which was served as a “rose” on the plate looking and tasting delicious as were the bread and the two different kinds of butter (the roasted salt butter was heavenly). It took a little while to bring the bread and our waiter clearly lost patience with his colleague and fetched it himself. We were offered more bread but a little late as we had finished our starter. Main course was roasted sturgeon presented with samphire and a few veg. It was a small portion but enough when having three courses. The sommelier was knowledgeable about the wines and clearly felt our choice went well with the food – our glasses were kept refilled seamlessly and neither of us got to an empty wine or water glass till we had finished. Pudding as a treat – my friend had the pear which was delicious and I (who very rarely have pudding) had a coffee and armagnac granita with a chocolate cigar which was out of this world. I would seriously recommend this as it looked and tasted fun and delicious. Our coffee and fresh mint tea was accompanied by chocolates with handmade honeycomb forming the “basket” – which we ate (sorry guys!)

The restaurant isn't cheap by any means but the service is attentive and the food shows both flavour and presentational flair – the chef is certainly talented.

The restaurant was clearly one where people who work in the area go for lunch (judging by the black and grey suits) and we were asked whether we had a time when we needed to go or whether we would like a leisurely lunch (so the 2 hours were at our request!) . When we got up to leave the maitre d' was standing at the door with our coats and helped us on with them chatting and making us feel like old friends rather than first time customers.

Would recommend for a… More

Percy's Country Hotel and Restaurant (Coombeshead Estate, Virginstow, Devon EX21 5EA)

I booked for a party of 9 (in the end only 8 of us made it) as we were staying at a hotel nearby. Tony asked me to specify any dietary no-no's and we had one of our party who didn't do seafood which I let him know. He called me at lunch time to confirm the numbers and let me know that we would be having lamb for main course. That took me a little by surprise as I was expecting a choice (and I have to say Lamb isn't my favourite food!) . We arrived just before 8 and were greeted warmly. We sat in a lovely bar with menu's while Tony brought us our drinks – we were most impressed with the wine list which was reasonably priced and had most of the bottles by the glass as well. Dinner was superb, well served as were the wines. The home made bread was to die for and the nasturiums decorating the starter were delicious. The lamb turned out to be very tasty and the verdict on the puddings was that they were fab. Apart from me who didn't manage to finish my meal as I was full there was nothing left on any of the plates. Food and service were delicious. Only feedback is that I would have expected and preferred to be offered a choice of main course in advance in discussion with the restaurant as I would not have gone for the lamb – of the 8 of us 6 would have preffered another meat or fish and as only one of the party couldn't do seafood it wouldn't have been too hard to have done something else for him if we'd gone for fish.

The restaurant deserved to be busier than it was – there was only us and one other table. However it isn't on the beaten track so perhaps being half term didn't help. Would highly recommend a visit here to eat but do discuss the menu. There are three choices for starter and pudding but no choice at all for main course which was our ONLY complaint.

Highly recommended for a great evening and a very genial host.

The Green Man (Mill End Green, Great Easton, Dunmow, Essex CM6 2DN)

The Green Man is a real find especially for seafood lovers. It is a lovely restaurant well laid out with decent space between tables so you don't feel cramped. In summer weather a table on the terrace is a treat! Food is delicious and served beautifully by friendly waitresses. Love the fact that every table gets a jug of iced water without asking and that they do decent non-alcoholic beer (Becks Blue) for those of us who drive!. Crisp white linen, sparkling glasses and shiny cutlery make the restaurant feel a lot more expensive than it is when you get the bill. Main courses are around the £15 mark – nearer £20 when you add a side dish or two. I've never seen quite such chunky golden crispy chips – not like some places where they have never seen a potato. The deserts are to die for – but they are big portions so make sure you save space. Well worth the drive

Bedford & Strand (bar) (1 Bedford Street, London, WC2E 9HH)

we had lunch here last Sunday having stumbled across it. The entrance is not inviting but persevere because there is a real treat when you find the small restaurant./bar downstairs. Crisp white tablecloths, friendly and attentive staff, decent wines by the glass (no choice of house wine or something marginally better here). The menu is appealing with plenty of choice and food is served piping hot and looking elegant as well as tasting good. You can select the cheese on your cheese board from a list.

My only comment was that the restaurant was not all that busy so the atmosphere for me was impacted by a group of 4 women sitting nearby who appeared to be talking to someone in the next street judging by their volume.

I would highly recommend this place
