Canteen Spitalfields (2 Crispin Place, London, London, E1 6DW)

Ate at Canteen last night. Have to say it was one of the most uninspiring meals I have had in a long time. The pie was good however its accompanying ‘seasonal greens’ turned out to be tasteless roughly chopped cabbage and ‘side salad’ (which I had asked for in place of mash potato) was roughly chopped cos lettuce with dressing and nothing else. The rhubarb and almond trifle was watery and lacked substance and taste. You got the sense that very little effort or care was put into the dishes – almost as if the Chef was off for the night and they had asked the kitchen porter to prepare the meals.

The Anthologist (58 Gresham Street, London, EC2V 7BB)

I agree with the previous reviewer regarding this bar. It's a welcome change to some of the other city bars, and is priced fairly reasonably, nice menu, good atmosphere, lots of seats for city girls in their too high heels etc. However it does need to learn a trick or two from the other bars as well…

They shy away from allowing you to telephone book, putting the phone through to voice mail at lunchtime, which can be a pain if you are ringing to tell them you are running late, canceling or just to find out if they have any last minute availability. They also keep some tables back from booking to allow for walk-ins. I understand the ethos for this, however it seems crazy they turn down someone wanting to book a table in the vain chance that someone else will walk in off the street. The website appears to be the best way to book but it's not the easiest to negotiate and of course isn't instant which in the City just isn't acceptable!

The service is a bit hit and miss. We waited a while to give our order and then as my partner put his fork down having just finished his starter they were hovering over us with the main course – having to ask one of the other waiters to clear our starter plates to enable them to put the main course down. We then waited a while to pay.

That said I will definitely be going back again (for the mango mojitos if nothing else), but I do hope they learn the magic words ‘Happy Hour’ very soon…

Gaucho Tower Bridge (2 More London Riverside, London, SE1 2AP)

Editor's pick

It's a lively restaurant and that's great if that's what you want. Bad points: Very dark, having come in from a lovely sunny evening it took a while to adjust to the darkness. Small bar area, no wonder they wanted us to go directly to our table. Service was fantastic, though sometimes a little too over enthusiastic, my other half threatened to chop the next hand off that tried to pour more wine out for us as one of the waiters tried to do it for the 3rd time in the space of 10 minutes… Starters were lacking in vegetarian imagination, and the salads could have benefited from some actual salad leaves in them (the duck salad was shredded duck, 3x 1cm potato cubes, 3 x1cm beetroot cubes and some spring onions…I rest my case). Good points:the brilliantly cooked steaks and sides (the sweet potato chips with chorizo were only just surpassed by the Portobello mushroom) the depth of knowledge our waitress had on the wines and also her descriptions of all the meat cuts and the dessert platter was just too tempting and even though our trouser belts were telling us we couldn't take any more our taste buds over ruled them.

The Three Crowns (175 Stoke Newington High Street, London, N16 0LH)

I have eaten several times on a weekday evening at the three crowns and so far have not been disappointed. The restaurant side of the pub is cosy but you are not on top of each other and the service always helpful and friendly. Our favorite dish has to be their pork belly and the rhubarb crumble is divine.
