Pollen Street Social (8-10 Pollen Street, London, London, W1S 1NQ)

After so many hyped up new openings this year, I wasn't sure what to expect at PSS. Maze had been extremely enjoyable so expectations were high yet PSS managed to exceed them to the fullest. First up, the atmosphere at the restaurant was lively and there was a definite buzz about the place. It was busy but service was attentive, and there was lots of background noise from chatting customers. The menu was interesting and varied but what really stood out was the execution. The food was presented beautifully and every element of the dishes was tasty and delicious. It was a treat to the palate! I had the Scottish halibut, Catalan paella, sprouting broccoli, pork-ham fat, mussel stock which was excellent, as was the Traditional English rice pudding, hay ice-cream & lime jelly. Both are highly recommended.

All in all, an extremely enjoyable evening and I look forward to our next visit.

Le Cercle (1 Wilbraham Place, London, London, SW1X 9AE)

Had a very disappointing evening out for dinner at le Cercle. We mentioned that one of our party had a nut allergy and were presented with a supplementary menu listing all the ingredients of each dish – nuts, dairy, alcohol etc. So far so good. We then asked to have the tasting menu but adjusted to exclude nuts and were told emphatically this was not possible. We asked if dishes could be changed for nut-free ones but told that this was also not possible and that we had to choose from the a la carte menu. At this point, I was on the verge of leaving but the maitre'd came along and sorted everything out. Had I not been with guests, I would have walked out. We had the tasting menu (with dishes changed to nut-free ones) and the food was very pleasant. It should be a nice restaurant but with this sort of treatment, I did not enjoy the dinner and would not recommend.
