We chose this restaurant after reading a review in a national paper. To say that we were disappointed is an understatement.

The lack of atmosphere was noticeable on arrival and was not helped by the fact that we were probably the only customers who were not tourists who had all chosen to eat early. Our table was booked for 8.15 and by 10.30 on a Saturday night the restaurant was almost empty.

We both chose the sustainable fish tasting menu but were told that one of the fishes – halibut – was not available. Mackerel was the substitute and would be cooked in the same way. Neither of us likes mackerel and an oily fish should not be cooked in the same way as a white fish, this was a lazy option from the chef. We were also told that we could not substitute any other fish as nothing else was sustainable. For a £30 supplement we could add a non sustainable fish. On a menu where there so many fishes to choose from this was ridiculous. We chose to miss a course for which they reduced the price by £7.

The food was unremarkable. All courses looked lovely but were lacking in “zing” – even the desert.

Unlike other reviews we found the service good.
