Hix (66-70 Brewer Street, London, London, W1F 9UP)

Our overall experience at Hix restaurant was very average. Driven by disappointing food and lacklustre service…but hey, the bar is cool.

We arrived for a 9:30pm booking, and we could already see by the line of people that they were overbooked. They were running late and asked us to have a drink at the bar while we wait for our table. The bar is very cool, small and intimate with an art deco feel. The music was also laid back and jazzy. But with no seats left we stood standing in the middle of the room, twiddling our thumbs wondering what to do. We eventually got the attention of a waitress who took our orders. The cocktails were decent, the atmosphere great and environment nice (if you can get a seat.)

Our waitress finally called us up into the restaurant, and we finally got seated at 10pm. We ordered an entree to share which was the special, the dumpling prawns; which sounded nice, but after waiting 30 minutes for it, we were disappointed to see that it came out as deep fried prawns, with batter so thick and lathered, that's all you could taste. It's the kind of grub you would get at a takeaway fish shop. We were starving by this stage so really hoping that the mains would be great. My goose salad was incredibly average, and my fiancés steak was good and cooked well, but came with nothing else. The highlight of my food was the side dish of cauliflower cheese…

All in all, this restaurant was ok, certainly not worth the reviews it has been getting. More style then substance. If you go, I recommend the bar instead or stick to the steaks. But if you want great british cuisine with loads of flavour and good value for money go to Tom's kitchen! By far the leader in this british genre of restaurants.

Galvin Bistrot de Luxe (66 Baker Street, London, London, W1U 7DJ)

Eating at Galvin was what I call an average experience…
the food ok…desserts were yummy but some of the mains lacked flavour especially the seared tuna
the service ok…the sommelier was helpful and insightful but most of the staff had a little too much french arrogance for my liking. the atmosphere good…relaxed but still professional
value for money good…dishes are very well reasonably priced.

I went there to celebrate a special birthday so perhaps I am being unfairly harsh; the restaurant would be nice for a casual saturday evening out but don't go here if you want a special occasion.

Mint Leaf (Suffolk Place, Haymarket, London, SW1Y 4HX)

I went to this restaurant based on the positive reviews it received and a one star score from the square meal, but I have to say I was extremely disappointed . The food reminded me of eating a bad takeaway that leaves a nasty aftertaste. We ordered the soft shell crab that seemed to be their popular signature dish, it came out looking like something that you would get from a take away fish and chip shop, and the delicate flavour of the crab was masked by a thick gooey batter. The lamb seekh kebab were literally logs of meat (lamb) smothered in garlic and nothing much else. At 120 pounds for the meal, honestly I would rather have got a take away kebab. I may feel sick after, but at least I would have enjoyed the flavours whilst eating it.

To be fair though, the service was good, and the atmosphere was try hard trendy. The music felt like you were in a nightclub. Overall it seems like a place you would go to to be seen as opposed to enjoying a great meal. If your after really good indian food try chutney mary for the same price. Incredible food, great atmosphere and stunning service.
