Goodman (11 Old Jewry, London, London, EC2R 8DU)

This place is a carnivore’s heaven!

Being a big fan of the Maddox Street branch I was hugely pleased that they opened a City branch and as soon as I heard about the opening I made the booking here, for comparison purposes obviously :)

We (group of 5) went there on 20th August for lunch and were seated by the kitchen at the back of the restaurant. While I do not usually like being in this spot it was really nice seeing the food being cooked.

The meat was cooked to absolute perfection and the cuts of meat were fantastically huge and so soft they cut like butter with a hot knife – PERFECT! I think between 3 of the guys they consumed near on 2kg of beef and had absolutely no complaints – the waitress even suggested a doggy bag so that they could take their T-bones home for the “dogs”…

Desserts were lovely, the waitress was very clued in about what to recommend and made a couple of personal suggestions to the group that were immediately ordered and devoured. The Hot Fudge Sundae was a massive portion and I could only manage about half of it but I have no complaints about the flavour, it’s just a little disappointing to leave dessert…it always makes me feel a bit sad leaving something so yummy!!

Anyway – I will be going back as soon as I can stomach that much food once again and I would recommend anyone who appreciates a good steak to try it out – AMAZING!!

Kurumaya (76-77 Watling Street, London, EC4M 9BJ)

Went there for lunch today. Upstairs is a normal “pret” style affair with salads and sushi ready made and ready to go, downstairs however is another matter…split into two parts (shoes on and shoes off) both sides are open and although you are close together (it is a small place) you do not feel as though you are sitting on your neighbours lap. We had the Salmon, miso soup, chicken skewers and the pork & fresh vegetable stir-fried noodles – all of which was lovely and filled us up nicely. This all came to less than £30 which we were very surprised about and for the quality of the food had expected to be a bit more. We couldn't squeeze a dessert in but it all looked good. Will definitely go back and recommend to others to give it a go!

The Anthologist (58 Gresham Street, London, EC2V 7BB)

Have been here twice now and the food is excellent with very good prices. The place is really buzzy (a little noisy for a romantic meal, but honestly what City girl wants to be taken to a bar like this for a 1:1 date?! We were a group of 4 and all had something different – The burger was enormous and a little unweildy between two giant chunks of chiabata, The steak sandwhich was a much cleaner option, nice cuts of meat and the right amount of bread – the chicken club and the salmon salad again worked a charm and filled us all up nicely. Trouble is the dessert menu of knicker-bocker-glory and banana split is great but after the huge mains you have no room to even try them – next time I'll share a salad and cram one in :) Staff are attentive without being over-bearing and service is great.

The Wolseley (160 Piccadilly, London, London, W1J 9EB)

I have been to The Wolseley quite a few times now, once for dinner and a LOT for breakfast. The dinner was a disappointment – we were seated in one of the private “upstairs” booths and it is like you are the forgotten entity – especialy even after pressing the bell and no-one coming to take another order for wine – in the end we were literally hanging over the rail to get someone to come up to us. The food was reasonable for dinner however breakfast is completely different!! There is no better way to cure a hangover than with a Wolseley full english (and if you are still munching away after 9.30am then “hair of the dog” with a glass of champers) – the only word I can sum this up with is YUM!!! They are very accomodating for breakfast – each time I've been we always have a few straglers who pitch up after the rest of us have ordered and squeeze in at the table. While I cannot reccommend this place for dinner I believe everyone should give breakfast a go – you really won't regret it!
