Hawksmoor Spitalfields (157 Commercial Street, London, London, E1 6BJ)

On the night we went it was exceptionally busy. Our food was excellent and the staff friendly and efficient. Whilst I liked the decor unfortunately I found the restaurant to be very noisy and having a normal conversation was impossible. If you're there on a busy night you'll be shouting to your companions to be heard. Best to avoid if your priority is the people you're with rather than the food.

Pham Sushi (159 Whitecross Street, London, EC1Y 8JL)

Recommended exclusively because of the quality of the food. I've eaten here around 5 times and each time the food has been memorable. Service is fine and the atmosphere and decor are average. However those are forgiven for the quality of the eating.

The Fentiman Arms (64 Fentiman Road, London, SW8 1LA)

Decent gastro pub. Friendly service and nice bright setting. Outside tables in the garden in summer are a plus. I've eaten here twice and the food was of a good standard. Conveniently close for Oval House theatre which was my reason for dining here. I wouldn't say it's worth commuting to Oval for otherwise.

Viet Garden (207 Liverpool Road, London, London, N1 1LX)

A place to visit for the very good traditionally cooked Vietnamese food. The decor is functional rather than aesthetic so it's a place to come to eat rather than to linger. I agree with the reviewer that the staff are young and friendly. At times the service can be a bit slow and they have a curious tendency not have their full range of beers in stock (there's only a list of about 5 to begin with).

I'd recommend this restaurant to people who live nearby and want a good meal in a casual relaxed setting. I am just around the corner from the restaurant and have eaten there more than a dozen times over the past 5 years. I'll keep returning. However given the functional setting I wouldn't recommend commuting to visit.

Fig Bistro (169 Hemingford Road, London, London, N1 1DA)

A small and intimate restaurant in an unusual location. Interesting and creative menu, although selection is limited (about 5 options per course). Portion sizes are moderate. Pluses are the standard of cooking (excellent) and atmosphere. A bit pricey for what it is. Quality of the service has ranged from competent to very good on the 4 occasions I've visited. Recommended.

My favourite restaurant in London. Interesting menu which is regularly updated, excellent food, warm quirky decor and great value for money. Minuses are the restricted space and limited wine list. Highly recommended none the less.
