Bald Faced Stag (69 High Road, London, N2 8AB)

I love the Bald. As you rightly say in your review, us East Finchelyites have been crying out for a place like this – where did we all go before, I wonder? The food never disappoints, the atmosphere is buzzy, with a good mixture of ages, and the portions are a very decent size. Great chips, too. If you are a party of four or more, the booths are the best places to sit, or try a table at the back. The open kitchen is a nice touch, and it gives you the opportunity to say thanks to the chefs on your way out. I go at least once a month and the standard is consistently good. Top marks!

Odette's (130 Regent's Park Road, London, NW1 8XL)

If you're not hungry and enjoy style over substance, with inattentive service, this is your restaurant. Portions are tiny (3 slivers of wood pidgeon as a starter with a blob of sweetcorn panacotta!), small portion of steamed halibut, which would have been tasteless had it not been accompanied by a puree of mushrooms and an amuse bouche of foamed something or other in a shot glass. My partner had the Welsh lamb for mains, which one might have expected to be delicious, but wasnt tender. It took about half an hour to bring our bottle of wine, the waiters were running about but seemed more interested in re-jigging the tables than serving customers. A poor effort.
