High Timber (Pauls Walk, 8 High Timber Street, London, London, EC4V 3PA)

Excellent for steaks!

Ate lunch there yesterday and rate the place very highly. Made to feel very welcome and the staff looked after us very well, especially as we ended up staying for a considerable amount of time.

Menu is geared towards African meat eaters and the steaks were fabulous. Good wine list and also has a cellar offering a range of top notch South African reds.

My only gripe would be to get another few signs about telling you how to find the place.

Will definitely be going back.

Fischer's at Baslow Hall (Calver Road, Baslow, Derbyshire, DE45 1RR)

We have just returned from a long weekend at Baslow Hall where we stayed whilst attending a friends wedding. This is most definitely a restaurant with rooms but this is not a review of the hotel.

Dinner at Fischers last night was all in all excellent. We arrived for pre dinner drinks in the lounge and were greeted by the charming maitre de. We sat by the fire and perused the menu and wine list over a gin and tonic and sherry. The menu was circa five starters, five mains with a couple of extra fish options.

We both started with the scallops with avocado and bacon ice cream. We both scored this highly. Mains were one duck and one pork. The duck dish was one of the finest I have had for some time which made up for a rather lacklustre pork which was a touch on the dry side. Puddings of millionnaire shortbread and also a raspberry concoction were fabulous and we both could have gone back for seconds. The acompanying wine was good value and there were certainly many very good options sub-forty pounds.

We would both recommend to others but the setting of the restaurant was not overly impressive and lacked mood and atmosphere. They certainly did not undercharge for the experience.

A good test is would one go back? Maybe…

Bybrook Restaurant at Manor House Hotel (Manor House Hotel & Golf Club, Castle Combe, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN14 7HR)

My girlfriend and I stayed over for Valentines weekend. The Manor House has an absolutely beautiful setting with the local village, Castle Coombe, regularly featuring as the prettiest in England. Can highly recomment staying and lovely walks in the surrounds.

Anyhow, we dined at the restaurant last Sunday and enjoyed the Menu Gourmand, a five course feast, lasting a couple of hours. We both simply could not fault the food. The highlights being the game terrine (course 2) and the smoked salmon (course 3) which would cause me to return just to heat them both again. I have never been a huge fan of big multi-course meals but they at least allow the chef to demonstrate what he can do and boy did he do it. Certainly one meal I will recall for some time to come and rates up there with offerings enjoyed at Chez Bruce and The Berkeley over the past few months.

Like the previous reviewer in hindsight I would have sent the pianist a drink and asked him to go and enjoy it in the bar whilst we ate. Service was OK but fell well short of what I would expect from a Michelin establishment – the staff seemed terrified and smile would have been pleasant. The dining room is big and lacks atmosphere but given this was Valentines maybe everybody was just focussing on whispering sweet nothings to their better halves. The bill nearly cused a heart attack and given that we did not really go nuts on the wine front left a bitter taste in the mouth.

However in summary I would go back but only after bonus time!

Annie's Chiswick (162 Thames Road, London, London, W4 3QS)

Went along for lunch on Sunday last weekend. Annie's is a buzzing place with kids and families making up most of the diners. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere but would advise others to probably go in the evening if they are looking for something a bit more intimate or romantic. This is the second time I have eaten there and would recommend to others.

Our starters of salt and pepper prawns were OK. I prefer peeled prawns but that is personal preference. Tasty if unremarkable. I had roast lamb as a main whilst my girlfriend enjoyed roast chicken. We both raved about both dishes with particularly high marks going to the sweet potato puree that came with the chicken. One desert of lemon tart with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream (from the specials) was the most disappointing thing we had. I told the chef to lose the sauce as it overpowered the lemon.

Other then the food, a good wine list and we both enjoyed a glass of prosecco to start.

All in all we both enjoyed and will be back.

The Yew Tree Inn (Hollington Cross, Andover Road, Highclere, Hampshire, RG20 9SE)

Superb! Treated to lunch as a birthday present and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Food was excellent and matched with a reasonably priced wine list. Having been to the French Table in Surbiton a couple of weeks before I thought the Yew Tree much the better. A pity such a drive from London but will be back in the summer for dinner and will stay over in the guest rooms.
