The Pot Kiln (Frilsham, near Yattendon, Berkshire, RG18 0XX)

I have eaten here before a few times and always been happy. Local food, focus on game – cooked well.

I went again yesterday and found the place has moved up many notches – targeting a star maybe? The food presentation was top restaurant class – the food was perfect on every plate.

We had the potted rabbit and the ox tongue to start – the ox tongue i had was the most tender meat and the most tender cooked tongue i have ever eaten. Good depth of flavour and cooked to perfection – melting and falling apart.

For mains i had the belly of pork and my friend had the duck. The belly pork was cooked to perfection – very tender and not at all dry – the most tender pork i have eaten. Depth of flavour was again there – as to the duck this was again the most tender i have eaten – cooked pink but light in colour and the skin not chewy which is the challenge.

We were too full for desserts so i cannot comment other than to say the selection was good. Service was impeccable, attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. we arrived early and that was no problem for them.

If you have been here before but not recently go back you will see a lot of change from what was already good! If you have not been start going!

Price £70 for two with 2 beers and 2 glasses of wine.

Fox and Hounds (Goldsborough, Whitby, Yorkshire, YO21 3RX)

This is a hidden gem. Booking is essential as this is a small quaint restaurant with a loyal following.

The food is exceptional – the menu which changes by the week combines fresh local fish, high quality meats selected for flavour and high quality ingredients – this is not pub food, this is high quality food cooked and served with passion.

The chef has a natural ability to put together flavours and ingredients that really work well – there is a lot of Italian influence in the food combined with a modern classical outlook. The food is kept fresh and vibrant with a typical offering of 3 starters, 3 mains, and 3 desserts allowing the food to be very fresh and the menu to change by the week. Home baked bread adds a lovely touch.

I had hare ragu pasta – something at home we do not have the time to spend all day preparing – followed by seared halibut on a bed of garlic and herb crushed potatoes with an anchovy and rosemary drizzle – finishing with a lovely lemon tart with mascapone cream. The hare pasta was well balanced – not too strong – pasta cooked to perfection and niceley presented. The fish was very moist with a crips skin, not over cooked, with a lovely balance of garlic in the potatoes and the drizzle worked really well and did not over power the fish which was very fresh. The lemon tart was a wonderful balance of sweet and sharp with a crisp and thin pastry that shows the skill of a good pastry sheff.

The wine list for a small restaurant features some well thought out wines with a range of value for money to some nice French white and red burgundies and a great sweet list of wines including vin santo, pedro ximinez and other wines.

Onto the service – the quality of the food is matched with the quality of the front of house. A friendly, knowledgeable and efficient front of house delivers a real personal service. Nothing is a problem or trouble for this department – remembering names of returning guests, even recalling favourite wines coupled with a thought for the… More

Hibiscus (29 Maddox Street, London, W1S 2PA)

It is nice to find a restaurant with well spaced tables and good noise suppression (carpets and textured walls) – makes for pleasant conversation!

The food was wonderful – a twist for each dish in terms of the spices which may not be for all – but we found worked very well.

We shared the starters Langoustine, Fois gras and ravioli – could not fault any of them. This is rich food. The mains were goose and the two course pork, Desserts came in the form of Rice Soufflé, chocolate tart, and parsnip tart. The parsnip cream start by itself was wrong, but when combined with the vanilla ice cream and caramel came together beautifully – was a delight. The pre dessert of granny smith jelly, with chestnut mouse and celeriac mousse was divine. The only thing that we all agreed did not work was one of the sweet treats with the coffee – a smoked fudge – tasted like eating the remnants of a piece of fudge that fell into the ash of a fire – too smokey!

This is a restaurant for meat eaters who like rich food – the focus of the plate is definitely the meat which was generous with very delicate and interesting sauces and artistic accompliments.

The restaurant manager, Azedine was very helpful, very knowledgeable with the wine and always on hand to help without being unobtrusive.

This is three star quality but some of the non standard spicing may just keep those traditional Michelin inspectors from going for the third -I hope not!
