The Hand & Flowers (West Street, Marlow, Buckinghamshire, SL7 2BP)

Went yesterday for Sunday lunch and this place is fantastic. Off the back of Tom Kerridge's great performance on the Great British Menu, this place was understandably packed.

The food was fantastic, I started with Moules Mariniere but this was nothing like one I had tasted before. No shells, all served in a pot with a stout based sauce which was lovely. My girlfriend had the smoked haddock omelette which was lovely as well, packed with flavours. The main event was the Roast Hog from the TV programme and it lived up to the hype. Never had pork that tasted so good!

Puddings were great too, my creme brulee with a shot of beer hit the spot. Simple was perfectly done. The gf had a pictachio cake with melon. That was fantastic.

I guess the only downside if there was one, was the service. Whilst the staff are very chatty and pleasant, they did seem to struggle slightly when the restaurant was full. I did hear a couple of complaints but we weren't in a rush and just happy to enjoy the atmosphere. I suppose once they move this up a notch with its increased popularity, it will tick every box. They even let us take our puddings to the garden.

All in all, a cracking sunday lunch and we'll definitely be back.

White Horse (1-3 Parsons Green, London, London, SW6 4UL)

Such a shame, everything about this place says it should be an excellent gastropub. The place is lovely and upstairs restaurant is very cosy and makes you feel like you’d want to stay for hours. The beer list is stunning (both lagers and ales), the white list is exactly what you want, good choice and good value. Then comes the food. Oh dear, such a shame. You read the menu and you are aching to try the food, as everything sounds fantastic. Really good hearty British dishes. But having been twice in the past few months (the second time was because we hoped the first would be a blip and we wanted it to be good) I feel that the kitchen just isn’t capable of producing the quality of food that the place deserves. The most recent time we went, we were with a group of mates and all of us were left a little disappointed by what we had eaten. I had the pork belly with mash. The pork belly was ok, though I suggest the meat wasn’t top quality as it was lacking flavour. The mash was poor at best, lumpy, watery and under seasoned to the point where it was tasteless. My girlfriend had the breaded lamb breast. It was revolting. It had been fried to crisp up the breadcrumbs but this just left it very greasy. Having complained to the waiter, he immediately took it away and allowed her to chose something else. His comment was, sorry it’s not a great dish.

Having given this place a second chance, I will definitely be back to drink their beers but never to eat again. Quite how square meal gave this a star is beyond me, usually they are spot on and I’ve not been let down before. Perhaps they were fooled by the potential this place has? Such a shame.

Gaucho Smithfield (93a Charterhouse Street, London, EC1M 6HL)

Gaucho's are on the whole good, really wouldn't go above that as praise. Having eaten here recently I was disappointed that the rib-eye was a bit tough. Having mentioned that in passing to the waitress, my meal was whisked away in a flash with many apologies and I was told a replacement would be out. Sure enough it was as well as replacement side dishes without being asked. Problem is that the meat really wasn't that great, not a patch on the quality of the Hawksmoor. I was told it was the wrong time of year in Argentina and it can be a little tough. So why, at those heavy prices, do they still sell it?

Overall, they are a solid performer but the prices don't justify the product. I do think in a time when people are concerned by the carbon footprint of their food, why go for this when you can pay less for a better British product? Service is impeccable.
