Not quite a restaurant, but I hear the Medieval Banquet venue near Tower Hill runs a fine line in wedding receptions. More

Thread “Summer Party” (in Venues & Events talk )

My boss has already asked me to start checking out summer parties (things are obviously looking up!). Did anyone have a really good experience last year? We're obviously after value, but anywhere with something really special to offer we'll look at!

Thanks More

Thread “Free Wi-Fi” (in Venues & Events talk )

So, I saw on the news this morning that you can now get free wi-fi at everest base camp.

why is it still when you check in to some hotels and venues that you still have to pay?! really gets my goat. More

Hey Vic,

I don't think you can. I don't know the official line, but John Terry got into massive trouble about 5 months ago for sub-letting his box (at an extortionate cost) for the FA Cup final. Might be different for the corporate ones though.

try the venues bookings line on 020 8795 9660. they'll probably be able to help

Reply to “Best hospitality ticket so far?” (in Venues & Events talk )

I was lucky enough to get an invite up to The Open at St Andrews last week and I've got to say, it's the best sporting event I've experienced. Golf fan or no, anyone can appreciate the heritage surrounding the course and with spectator galleries surrounding all the pivotal holes, you can take in three or four groups playing at a time – unique among British courses.

Provided by Sodexo, the hospitality village is also second to none. Located midway along the course, no hole is more than 15 minutes' walk away. The chalets are well-equipped, with plenty of TVs and bars dotted about so you don't miss any of the action. The food served was seasonal and traditionally Scottish: cullen skink tart; haggis-stuffed fondant potatoes; Scottish raspberries and whisky ice cream were all exceptional.

A price tag of around £500 compares favourably to other sporting events, although with accommodation and travel, it can add up.

All in all for a golf fan, there's arguably no better ticket, but there's plenty for non-golf-bods to enjoy too. More

Depending on the directors' age, rockaoke is an awesome way to entertain. I've been at a couple of events where it's really got the party started. Singing with your own band! What could be better?! It doesn't come cheap – particularly if you're only a group of around 20 or so, but it's certainly entertainment that won't be forgotten in a hurry! More

Thread “Tequila Tastings – it makes me happy…” (in Venues & Events talk )

I was lucky enough to stumble across a tequila tasting event at Shoreditch's Green & Red last night.

I had no idea that so many different types of tequila existed, let alone the amount that they vary in quality! Stef Oghene – one of the most celebrated bar tenders in town – is really trying to push tequila (and so he should, he's the brand ambassador for Cazadores) and get it onto the drinks lists of some of the top restaurants.

Not being a massive cognac or whisky fan, I found the drink so much more accessible than traditional digestifs. I know it's going to take a while to shed the ‘lemon, salt, shoot’ image, but some of the blends really can stand up to the more traditional after-dinner drinks.

Has anyone heard of venues doing tequila tastings for corporate groups? I think I may have inadvertantly found a real winner here. Young city boys would be so much more up for going to a tequila tasting hosted by a funky, young barman than they would a wine session held by a stuffy old sommelier. More

Reply to “Top London Venues” (in Venues & Events talk )

Hi Simon,

What a great idea! I totally agree with your top three. You can't argue with the NHM museum being the best party venue in town. The Darwin Centre it launched last autumn is really something special. Perfect for summer-time events with its piazza.

I'd have Vinopolis a bit further up the list, to be honest. With its versatility and range of spaces, I think it should be pushing for the top spot.

The only thing i think your list is missing is a real old stalwart, a venue with bags of character and real heritage. I'd say somewhere like The Law Society, Gibson Hall or on of the livery companies' halls. More

Reply to “What makes a good team building event?” (in Venues & Events talk )

Yeah, teambuilding that isn't too structured is the best. I've been to a few that are really regimented, which end up feeling more like a military training camp than a relaxing, bonding experience. I think the days of ropes, planks and ladders are over. Time to welcome in some interesting new concepts. The best new ones I've seen are sword fighting, drumming, cooking and driving days! More

Reply to “Xmas party deals on ebay?” (in Venues & Events talk )

It's good to see someone trying something different. It's no secret that Christmas parties aren't selling as well as they have in the past, so why not give something new a go? At the very least, it's got people talking.

Katie – I think ‘tragic, inappropriate and desperate’ goes a bit far. Many event companies, restaurants, venues and bars rely on Christmas trade to stay afloat/make a profit for the year, so anything Impulse can do to sell its last few nights is fair and justified. I think you're right when you suggest it's just something the company's trialing, just to see how it goes.

In reality, if AW is right and Impulse hasn't sold parties on the nights and are attempting to shift the last few like this, so what?! At the end of the day, it's only 4 nights out of a whole Christmas season, so I don't think it says too much about the company's ability to deliver, or the state of the industry.

I would question the practicality of putting them on Ebay, though. I mean, is the company's party planner/social secretary going to bid for it with their account and pay for it using their own PayPal facility? I can't see companies setting up Ebay accounts purely for one bid, unless they're getting a massively discounted rate which, I guess, they may well be… More

Hi Mark,

As I'm sure you know, there's plenty of fun and cool venues in the Old Street area!

There's only a few that are used to hosting events though, to my knowledge. The East Room is a only a few hundred yards away from Old Street tube and will work well for you. Has a capacity of about 150 and does really good-quality snack food. More

Reply to “Looking for a kooky Christmas party venue” (in Venues & Events talk )

Lots of bars and restaurants put on some great Christmas packages without too much theming. We had ours at Paramount in the Centre Point building last year and it was wicked. The views from the top floor are amazing at night. I also had some friends who held theirs at Soho House a couple of years back. They said it was really well styled and organised. Good venue to tell friends you're going to, too! More
