Hakkasan Mayfair (17 Bruton Street, London, London, W1J 6QB)

Buzzing, happening, trendy, special , swank, chic, exclusive are the words that come to mind following my trip to Hakkasan Mayfair… had booked a late sunday dinner and did not expect the place to be so full and full of life… overall I do recommend although on this occasion I can only comment on the tables in the bar area upstairs ..being so late it was recommended I stay in the bar area as the restaurant down stairs was emptying out and I was not disappointed.
DETAILS – To give you a picture of the place …On arrival met by a doorman – down a lovely swanky hall .. with cloakroom ..to a reception area where two very good looking receptionists in red cocktail dresses greeted me warmly .. the decor slightly futuristic .. it could have been the entrance to a grand spa .. but it does really work and you immediately feel you are someplace special … I did feel slightly underdressed when I saw the receptionists but that was my own fault for getting the dress code wrong … you won't feel out of place here very dressed up ..
Waiting for my companion at the bar …which really is lovely and a good vantage point to watch the bar staff make many cocktails – the buzz around me was electric .. the bar area is well designed .. a great bar the width of the room with some high tables then a glass like partition separating the area for dining tables ..I didn't get to see the room downstairs which is the actual restaurant area as it was getting late but I will be back to sample. My partner was quite late and the staff were really very nice to me .. I was given the perfect table being alone ..chosen by the really lovely women in red who met me .. and chosen very well as I was more than comfortable in my corner table …

The food was not quite as memorable as I expected but I would like to give it another chance ..the famous ribs were very nice but very small … the dim sum was very good .. the main courses were a little disappointing .. one of which was the spicy prawn in lily bulb which is one i… More

The Ledbury (127 Ledbury Road, London, London, W11 2AQ)

I have to say overall it was a disappointment … I was there for lunch – everything was mediocre from the dining room to the food and i won't be back and won't be recommending …

DETAILS – I was dining with a companion and we had looked forward to a long lazy afternoon of chat and wine but it was pretty obvious to us both from the start this would be lunch and out … Another restaurant with no area for an aperitif … the restaurant was quite full which meant it had a nice buzz … i had requested a round table and indeed we did get what seemed to be only one available so I was grateful for that .. however it was not in the best spot .. just inside the door .. and the chairs were facing an odd direction .. I know this sounds picky but being comfortable means you forget the outside world and stay too long …Do restaurants ever put thought into the importance of seating arrangements for the overall enjoyment of the dining experience and which usually means in turn the diner does not want to leave and spend more money … every time I go to Marcus Wareing the afternoon is written off as is such a comfortable and embracing room .. you will spend any money just to stay there … it does not surprise me it is a sister restaurant to the Square which must be one of the worst dining rooms in London ( after Hibiscus! ) … it has the same hollow floor -board feeling as the Square .. its also very very bright having windows all round which again keeps one too alert …

Anyway to the food …we were asked if we had any allergies before the chef sent out our amuse bouche .. which was a tiny tiny canape the size of a sixpence ..we found this quite funny … Have to particularly mention the bread as it was without doubt the best I have ever had …(Helen Darozze in Paris has held this accolade up this this ) something for everyone .. a fantastic onion bread that was almost like a pie … an incredible chestnut mini loaf and sourdough … I choose the lunch menu while my friend went for the a la carte …and I have… More

Pétrus (1 Kinnerton Street, London, London, SW1X 8EA)

A superb lunch at Petrus , great food, great service and great value – suitable for both an occasion and a business meeting … and if you are like me and your preference is for a round table then you will like it here as all the tables are round.

DETAILS – A lovely welcome from the Maitre D but we decided to go straight to the table for our apperitif …the pre drink area was not particularly inviting … a little bit near the door , more like a waiting area and a little bit quiet being near the empty part of the restaurant – i particularly like an aperitif before going to the table and there are in fact very few restaurants that have a nice area for this…

I had brought my friend for his birthday lunch and need not have worried about getting a good table as it seemed to me there were no bad tables … it is a very well designed room .. while a quite large room it has the appearance of being in sections so—- as when i was there it was about a third full ..it didn't impact . however i would have liked a little more buzz as it was a little quiet… not sure what to say about the room itself .. it is beige with a luxurious carpet but is just missing something in terms of atmosphere that i can't put my finger on it … I do agree with a previous reviewer who said most diners seemed to be out for a “posh” lunch and not regulars or business groups … I think with the value service food this will change …

To the food … we choose the Perfect Match menu which is a special for February and incredible value … a mini tasting menu with wines ( £50) so all decision making handed over .. great wines with great dishes ( flavours still memorable) and quite generous portions .. with separate side dishes of vegatables served in little pots ..( the lunch menu is £24/£29 )

The service was superb . it was generous, warm , humourous but yet professional and really made an effort to add to the experience from the minute we walked in to leaving … The only part of the tasting menu I thought was under par… More

Hibiscus (29 Maddox Street, London, W1S 2PA)

As disappointment is relative to expectation I suppose that is one reason why I would have to say my biggest let down yet. I did have high expectations.. and Hibiscus had been on my list of restaurants to go for for some time … if it is food only you are interested in then do go but if you want the package don't. you can pick out from below what you need from your dining experience and make up your own mind – a brief overview -the service was dreadful and grudging. the room was grim, the food was superb but very small servings, and lunch was very good value but as a single diner it was the first time i ever felt uncomfortalbe in a restaurant

To start ..the room is like an airport lounge .(had thought The Square was the worst dining room in the city) reception reminds me of the waiting hall at my local garage .. certainly one would not feel like a pre lunch drink there …however the receptionist was wonderful … A single diner I was seated at a small table for two right beside another couple .. making them feel very uncomfortalbe . note to restaurants .. don't do this .. its not fair on them .. they feel listened to . and its not fair on the single diner .. they are trying not to listen. there were several nice big round tables ( at least 4 ) vacant for the duration .. it was another example of the grudging service I was to experience not to have given these tables either or both of us.

I really don't know if this was an off day but from the start the head waiter seemed to resent having to come near me … A Kir for my aperitif which was one of the best i have had .. and was really surprised to see on my bill later was only £6 ;.. I settled for the lunch with a glass of wine which is £ 39 and excellent value … a small amuse bouche a pineapple drink ..nothing to write home about .. an amazing starter of a fois gras terrine . a main course of superb partridge .. and a lovely dessert … the wine that came with the lunch was in fact ia very good french red and indeed I stuck with… More
