Roussillon (16 St Barnabas Street, London, London, SW1W 8PE)

Let us start with the positives as it is down hill from there…

Our first experience of eating at Roussillon a couple of months ago was excellent and we would have rated it 9-10 (It had the Winter menu which was exquisite and well balanced – This was THE reason why we returned as we were so impressed with its overall delivery). Service and atmosphere continued to live up to our expectations of a Michelin star restaurant in our visit yesterday. This was discreet and good. In addition, the selection of wines on menu is excellent and we tried this time a lovely Portuguese white wine from the Bucelas region.

However our food was bland and did not live up to expectations. The menu has now moved to Spring which leaves a lot to desire (…or not!). The review from Square Meal must have been done in a better day but bears no resemblance to the menu available for paying clients and makes you wonder whether it was especially designed for the food critic…

The starters we had were fried foie gras with mushrooms which previously had been delightful but on this occasion over cooked and tasteless. We also had the scallops with chlorophyll sauce. Interesting sauce but the scallops did not live up to expectations. A disappointing start…

Main course now…lobster with langoustines – normally you would think this must be a wow dish – not to be the case…insipid was the most complimentary word we could think of! Moving over to the seabass with quail eggs and green beans with a red orange sauce…flavourless again although the red orange sauce was a positive revelation!!!

Maybe we will finish in style? It was a bit better than previous attempts…The rhubarb with pistachio dessert had some nice flavours and the wife enjoyed the end of the meal – Finally something to please the palate. The chocolate dessert with the gold leaves was ok but not earth shattering!

You expect a Michelin chef to do better than you in the kitchen with all the paraphernalia and training they have had but on this occasion I… More
