Pollen Street Social (8-10 Pollen Street, London, London, W1S 1NQ)

Superlative. Thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience with every detail taken into account with friendly and efficient service. Delivious cooked food with a twist and some nice twists. Would definitely go back. Ordered the lightly cured salmon and the Black Angus Rib Eye, smoked potatoes, charred egg plant – delicious. Good buzzy informal atmosphere. Most people were dressed for business but it really wasnt that stuffy a place. Look forward to my next visit. Pretty faultless all round.

China Tang at The Dorchester Hotel (The Dorchester, 53 Park Lane, London, London, W1K 1QA)

I hate to write reviews that are overly critical but I don't have much choice. China Tangs is ridiculously expensive for food that is not as good as some of the better places in China Town if you know where you are going and are also a quarter of the prices and twice the portion size. There were a number of things that niggled especially as we were paying top dollar for the experience. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant is very nice as were the quality of the cocktails we ordered. However we ordered our starters to be told that we would have to have our mains first as there was a lengthy wait for the crispy duck. Not being funny but surely a restaurant of this standing should be better prepared and should not run out of its signature dish? So we ordered our mains and ate them before the starters. A combo of salt and pepper squid (delicious); scallops (bland) and Szechuan prawns (average) arrived with side orders of mushrooms and stir-fried rice (so so). Portion sizes considering each main was £20+ were daylight robbery. The starter finally arrived Back To The Future style after the main and to be honest was pretty delicious, what little we got of it. We ordered a whole Duck, it didn't feel like we got a whole duck. The menu states its ordered in two parts. You get the breast filleted into small pieces with pancakes. There were far more pan cakes then duck breast. The rest of the carcass is taken back and shredded and sauteed and returned to the table, What we got was the smallest dices pieces on a tiny saucer. Not sure what happened but no way had we eaten a whole duck between four people. I can't really tell you what happened as I don't have a clue. £46 for a whole duck where we got tiny amounts of meat (no matter how delicious) is a rip off. All i can say is I will never return to eat at this restaurant with service like this when you are treated like an idiot. I hate it when you go to places like this that are as expensive as this and you leave looking for the… More

Bread Street Kitchen (One New Change, St Paul's, London, London, EC4M 9AF)

Visited for a friend's birthday and overall pretty ok but I'd say it's not quite what I'd expect from a place bearing Gordon Ramsey's name. Thought long and hard about the score for the food and for me it's a 6 / 7 out of 10. Atmosphere wise the dining area is very impressive in terms of its decor. New York style art deco, very buzzy, spacious and as big as an aircraft hanger. The food for me was a mixed bag. Ordered a combo of things between the group. Pressed Chicken and Fois Grais terrine, delicious but for me maybe a little on the salty side. Prawn Cocktail was pretty good. Scallops also good but ruined by the fact they were gritty (not washed properly and a bit sandy?) – The Manager to his credit took it off the bill and mentioned something about the cooking process however we were not 100% convinced with the reasoning. Mains were veal (huge slab of meat), seared Tuna steaks and a combo of sides – chips and green. All of the food was competently cooked but none of it had the wow factor you'd expect from a Ramsey operation. I'm probably sticking my neck out but I would say the Tuna isn't as good as something you might get at a high st chain like Sophie's Steakhouse. I'd say the Tuna steaks were maybe even a little over seasoned. Service was however excellent as our waiter was kind enough to arrange a birthday dessert for my friend. Think I will give it another go but I will probably stick to Saturday nights to eat there as given it's location, it will probably be packed with City Boys flashing their cash during the week.

Mele e Pere (46 Brewer Street, London, London, W1F 9TF)

Absolutely brilliant and a little gem in the middle of Soho. Food was exquisitely cooked. Started with the Mozarella and Radicchio plus Courgettes shavings – fresh delicious flavours. Lamb with Polenta for main was melt in the mouth goodness. Definitely will be heading back for a return visit.

Red Fort (77 Dean Street, London, W1D 3SH)

Used The Red Fort for business lunches and also for pleasure. The food is excellent and faultlessly cooked. Highly recommended is the shared platter for starters – a meze of choice parts of the starter menu; tikka salmon (melts in the mouth) and tikka chicken, delicate spinach patties filled with cheese and green chilli, monkfish amongst other choice bits. The mains were the king prawns (very meaty and substantial), stone bass, lentils, rice and paneer to share. All exquisitely cooked. Whilst the food was good the dining experience was not faultless. Slow, inattentive service – there when you're ok and not requiring service and nowhere to be seen when you are trying to pay the bill. Prices are on the steep side and maybe 15 – 20% maybe too expensive. However we had a lovely night and enjoyed the experience so much we would return.

Navarro's (67 Charlotte Street, London, W1T 4PH)

Firm favourite from across the years for both work and play. The food is always consistently delicious and hearty! The only thing I would say is the indifferent slow service…However I can live with that as the food is great and the prices are reasonable!

Pizza East (56 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6JJ)

Occupying the site of a former legendary Shoreditch venue known as the TBar, this restaurant is an interesting mixed bag of a proposition. to be frank the service was substandard. Not one detail was executed to the letter, on point or promptly. This became a huge matter of frustration as several times a bottle of wine or drinks were brought to the table and the waiter didnt bring enough glasses, pour glasses for everyone and just sloped off without completing the tables drinks orders.
The food? Pretty ok pizzas with interesting fresh ingredients but to be frank the execution was no better than Pizza Express.
The venue was super hot and stuffy. I couldnt wait to pay the bill and get the hell out of there to get some fresh air. I probably wont make a return journey back to this venue as there are too many superior places to eat in this neck of the woods. Keep up this level of service and you wont have any customers left…

Arbutus (63-64 Frith Street, London, London, W1D 3JW)

This used to be a firm and reliable favourite of mine and I used to use this resturant for both business and pleasure. However, i think standards have been slipping in my most recent visit. The food is still pretty good but it felt it wasnt good as it used to be. Not sure if this is over familarity or if things have indeed declined a little. The dining experience was ok but I wasn't best pleased at the snooty service, Not something I would usually associate with Arbutus which has always been about chic and smart dining without the pretencious.

Pearl at the Chancery Court Hotel (Chancery Court Hotel, 252 High Holborn, London, London, WC1V 7EN)

Consistently really good. Use this place for business and pleasure. The attention to detail on the dishes and service is immaculate. Food wise, the concept is Fusion, combining Modern Eclectic and Japanese influences. Definitely deserves more love. Fab wine list and also the cheese trolley is most impressive.

Viajante (Town Hall Hotel, Patriot Square, London, London, E2 9NU)

Quite simply magnificent. We had the six course taster menu with accompanying wine picked by the sommelier for each course. Every dish was assembled with, precision care and passion. Nuno Mendes is the antithesis of the likes of Gordon Ramsey in the sense he is quietly spoken and humble in his approach. He himself served some of the dishes at our table and talked us through the ingredient and cooking process which is a really nice touch. The man is an artist and I have to say I cant wait to go back for a repeat visit sometime soon. Special mentions go to the Thai Explosion II chicken “sandwich”, Charred leeks, lobster, hazelnut and milkskin; Duck, mushroom caramel, blackberries and girolles. Heck, it was all good. Just get a reservation, sit back and enjoy!

Gauthier Soho (21 Romilly Street, London, W1D 5AF)

Visited Gauthier yesterday for a client lunch and I am happy to report a fine dining experience. The key to making this such a pleasant encounter was the attention to detail and the service.
The food was delicious and each course was met with mini taster courses in between. I had the scallops for starter and the lamb for main. Both did not disappoint. The cooking was excellent as was the presentation. There is an extensive wine list too and we washed the meal down with a fantastic Pinot Grigio. Afters was the cheese board which left us on a massive high. Definitely recommended is the cheese with the black truffle – potent but amazing!
The venue itself is a converted townhouse with an intimate atmosphere and I for one will be using this restaurant as a regular place for business and pleasure.

Clos Maggiore (33 King Street, London, London, WC2E 8JD)

Quite simply magnificent. Went again last week and Clos Maggiore delivered yet again. The atmosphere is friendly, calm and pleasant – I can see why this venue is labelled as good for dinner dates. The food was sublime. Starters of scallops and potato wafers was delicious and well balanced. The main was sea bass with chorizo potato cakes and a chorizo sauce. An explosion of flavours with every bite being sublime. This was my fifth visit and Clos Maggiore goes from strength to strength. Will keep this one up the sleeve as i want it to stay special so will be using this sparingly for the clients I really like!

Bocca di Lupo (12 Archer Street, London, London, W1D 7BB)

Visited Bocca Di Luppo last week for lunch and to be honest I cant see what the hype is about this place. Pitched as more rustic Italian street food joint, this restaurant is vastly inferior to some of the Italian Eateries Soho has to offer and believe me there's a lot. In terms of service, our front of house was fine but our waiter smouldered off attitude. The food was very disappointing. My starter of Bone Marrow Risotto tasted more like a bottle of Chianti had been poured into flavour it. The main of pheasant was dry, stringy, over cooked and flavourless. My dinner dates seafood pasta was distinctly average . Nothing on this vist had made any kind of impression on me pulling me back for a return visit…

Aqua Kyoto (Fifth Floor, 30 Argyll Street, London, London, W1B 3BR)

Visited Aqua Kyoto last night and must say whilst the food was very good I am not sure it was entirely worth the money, The venue itself is beautifully decorated and there is a breathtaking view of London from the roof terrace. I am sure dining out here in the Summer will be of great demand. You can tell the owners of this restaurant have ploughed a lot of cash in to do the venue up as it's very plush inside however there feels like there is something missing in tems of the atmosphere. It feels a bit souless and clinical, couldn't quite put my finger on it though…
Anyway, back to the food. My fundemental issue with Aqua Kyoto is the service which functions like an expensive Wagamamas or Ping Pong. That's fine for those restaurants as they are cheap and that's what you expect from them but not when you are paying £80 per head (thats what our meal came to). I do not feel that is acceptable for a high end restaurants with (probable) Michelin star pretensions. We were only told this after we had ordered and we were also seated 25 mins late with a promise of complimentary drinks which never turned up. The actual dishes turn up whenever they are cooked so when you are seven hungry blokes with healthy appetities, this is not very condusive to having a great dining experience. So what did we order? A selection of starters such as the delicious terrayaki chicken thigh skewers which were superbly cooked; tempura prawns and veg which were very delicate but to be honest no better or worse than I have had at Ping Pong. Delicious and amazingly put together scallop, prawn, and caviar cake like construction ( I forget what the actual name of the dish is). The mains is where the restaurant excelled itself. Mine was the seared tenderloin of beef with japanese mustard and a side order of udon noodles with mushrooms and beans. The beef was beautifully cooked and melt in the mouth. We were there for over two hours in total and had the food turned up cooked together rather than turn up sporadicall… More

Upstairs Bar & Restaurant (89b Acre Lane, London, SW2 5TN)

Editor's pick

This restaurant is consistently a fantastic experience and one of South London's hidden gems. I eat in a lot of nice west-end restaurants and am lucky enough to be able to expense those so go to a fair view and have become a little cynical about what I think makes for a good culinary experience. I am delighted to announce that Upstairs is as good as anything the west-end has to offer if not better. First off, this is a complete word-of-mouth experience and this is further heightened from the fact it's above a sandwich shop and access is via an entrance of a side street. If you didn't know what you were looking for, you would never find it as there is no signage to pull in passers-by or casual diners, that's not how this place works. Ok, lets get straight on to the food and drink – in one word – amazing. The experience is high-end michelin star west-end quality with very reasonable prices. I ordered the potted shrimp with a guacomole accompaniement for a starter which was very unusual but worked really well . My dinner date ordered the blue cheese and hazelnut salad – both were delicious but I will save the superlatives for the main courses. Who could have thought an ever present meal such as steak and chips could be pulled off with such a different twist of complex, subtle and delicious flavours, every mouthful was an explosion of different textures and tastes which have left me dreaming of a return visit. The other main course ordered was the seabass which also was to die for and left us wanting more (in a good way not because the portions weren't too small , they are actually just right!). I could go one about why this is special but when you live in South London and there aren't too many places of this quality around, this one has to be experienced. Long may it continue as a secretive word of mouth special place! Drat, writing a review on here might spoil that…
