Hasn’t rated any restaurants this year.

Luc's Brasserie (17-22 Leadenhall Market, London, EC3V 1LR)

Luc's seems to be improving again after a while in the doledrums; which the Zinc Bar is nothing to write home about, the food is now back to its French best, with excellent steaks easily a match for those offered by the likes of Chez Gerard. Waitresses seem to come from all points of the compass except France, but they are reasonably efficient and the Maitre D' keeps them in check. It feels as if there are a few too many tables for the available space, but it all adds to the lively but sophisticated atmosphere.

Ekachai (9-10 Arcade Liverpool Street, London, EC2M 7PN)

Busy and bustling canteen-style restaurant in the Metropolitan Railway Arcade close to Liverpool Street station. The staff are, if anything, over-attentive in their relentless quest to get you fed, watered and out as soon as possible, but once you become accustomed to waving them away, you can take as long as you like – and it's never a problem getting their attention when you need a top-up! Seating is communal and no place for a quiet tete-a-tete – you might end up banging elbows with some rather loud FOREX types from the surrounding banks, but at least they can be entertaining to listen to!

Thai Square City Minories (136 Minories, London, London, EC3N 1NT)

The delightful menu and waiting staff are strangely at odds with the austere former office building, which seems to defy all attempts to generate an Oriental atmosphere despite the eclectic decor. The food is extensive and superb – portions are not huge, but such is their quality that this is probably just as well! The new range of Thai red, white and rose wines is interesting and good value, which is just as well as the food is a little on the pricey side – but worth it!

Barcelona Tapas Bar y Restaurante (24 Lime Street, London, EC3M 7HS)

My favourite branch of this excellent Tapas chain, thanks to its fresh decor, buzzing environment – and above all, superbly attentive service. While it lacks the open space and balcony of the Middlesex Street branch, this is more than made up for by the overall dining experience. The food remains the best Tapas in the City, with a vast range and very reasonable pricing meaning that your table is never quite big enough for all the plates you ordered…
